By forming polymers in the CPC microstructure, the size, density, and arrangement of apatite crystals can be manipulated, offering a new route to modulate the microstructure and porosity of apatitic cements.

Preparation and characterization of calcium phosphate cement with enhanced tissue adhesion for bone defect repair

Summary: In this study, we successfully prepared calcium phosphate cement (CPC) with anti-washout and tissue adhesion properties by adding oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), which significantly enhanced tissue adhesion. The synergistic effect of OSA and citric acid in CPC resulted in the formation of a three-dimensional gel network structure, promoting adhesion between the cement and bone tissue. Our work aims to advance the development of injectable bone materials for clinical applications.

Summary: Traditional bone fixation devices made from inert metal alloys provide structural strength for bone repair but are limited in their ability to actively promote bone healing. However, injection and compression molding techniques have successfully been used to manufacture composite silk-ceramic scaffolds comprising hydroxyapatite and silk fibroin, showing the potential for large-scale manufacturing of natural protein-based bone grafts and fixation devices. This work demonstrates a step closer towards moving bone tissue engineering to large-scale manufacturing of resorbable bone grafts and fixation devices based on natural proteins.

Synthesis and sintering of B, Sr, Mg multi-doped hydroxyapatites: Structural, mechanical and biological characterization

Summary: In this study, eight different compositions of BO33-, Sr2+, Mg2+ multi-doped HAs were synthesized by microwave irradiation method to investigate their structural, mechanical, and biological features for bone substitute applications. The results showed that the doping of Sr, Mg, and B ions improved the biological properties of HA, and samples sintered at 1100 degrees C were suggested to have potential as a biomaterial for bone implant applications.
