Thin Films of Polyaniline-Based Nanocomposites with CeO2 and WO3 Metal Oxides Applied to the Impedimetric and Capacitive Transducer Stages in Chemical Sensors

Beatriz Cotting Rossignatti et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between the composition of nanocomposites and the sensitivity and linearity of electrochemical pH sensors. The study found that the ECS sensitivity of PANI/CeO2 increased by 213% compared to metal oxide, and the ECS linearity of PANI/WO3 increased by 64% compared to polymeric sensitivity. This study provides important evidence for the application of nanocomposite thin films of PANI with metal oxides in electrochemical sensors.

Renewable Hybrid Biopolymer/Polyaniline Composites for Humidity Sensing

Iurii A. Anisimov et al.

Summary: This study focused on electrically conductive polyaniline (PANI)-based polymer composites and their films, specifically those containing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The goal was to evaluate PANI composites that contained biopolymer platforms (chitosan or cellulose micro powder) for humidity sensing, and compare them to composites that contained carbon nanofibers. Ternary film materials were prepared by polymerization of PANI onto the biopolymer or carbon support, followed by physical blending with PVA. The results showed that chitosan-based films had good mechanical properties, moderate electrical conductivity, and favorable humidity response and moisture uptake. Chitosan was found to be a valuable mechanical reinforcement additive for PANI-based composites. Cellulose and carbon-based composites were generally inferior to chitosan, except for higher conductivity. The study suggests that PANI/biopolymer composites are promising humidity sensor materials due to their good moisture uptake and electromechanical properties. The ability to tailor the structure and properties of PANI/biopolymer composites makes them attractive as sustainable materials for humidity sensing, compared to conventional ceramic materials.

Single-Material OECT-Based Flexible Complementary Circuits Featuring Polyaniline in Both Conducting Channels

Lorenzo Travaglini et al.

Summary: The organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) with a conjugated polymer as the active material serves as the elementary unit of organic bioelectronic devices. By utilizing a complementary circuit with PANI as the channel material in both transistors, low power consumption and excellent performance can be achieved. This PANI-based circuit demonstrates a gain of approximately 7 and operates effectively in aqueous electrolyte on a flexible biocompatible chitosan substrate.

Model improvement for super-Nernstian pH sensors: the effect of surface hydration

Gustavo Daniel M. Madeira et al.

Summary: The sensitivity of polyaniline thin films was studied with a focus on the hydration of the film's surface, showing that a parameter (1/r) related to hydration can adjust the Nernst model and describe the upper limits for the sensitivity of super-Nernstian sensors. The sensitivity decreased with the amount of water lost in the process, indicating a direct correlation between hydration and sensitivity.

Characterization of polyaniline thin films prepared on polyethylene terephthalate substrate

Yuliia A. Stetsiv et al.

Summary: The study prepared polyaniline thin films through in situ chemical polymerization on a substrate, characterized the pure polyethylene terephthalate and polyaniline thin films, revealing a high degree of oxidation forming a smooth thin film on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate. Delocalized polyaniline macromolecule aggregates in spherical and irregular shapes were also observed on the substrate.
