Agricultural Residues as Raw Materials for Pulp and Paper Production: Overview and Applications on Membrane Fabrication

Limenew Abate Worku et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for pulp and paper is driven by population growth, industrialization, and urbanization. However, the reliance on wood fibers has led to a shortage of resources and increased deforestation. Using non-wood substitutes such as corn stalks, sugarcane bagasse, and agricultural residues can help alleviate the shortage and have applications in various industries, including membrane development. This paper reviews the current trends in using agricultural residues for pulp and paper production and explores the application of membranes derived from lignocellulosic materials.

High-flux, porous and homogeneous PVDF/cellulose microfiltration membranes

L. C. Malucelli et al.

Summary: The low hydrophilicity of membranes increases water treatment costs, while the application of hydrophilic biopolymers like cellulose is limited due to their complex structure. This study shows that partial dissolution of cellulose improves the water flux of PVDF/cellulose membranes. The porous structure obtained after solvent removal suggests that the water flux and pore size can be tailored through the membrane production method.

Application of lignin in preparation of slow-release fertilizer: Current status and future perspectives

Jiajun Lu et al.

Summary: Lignin, the most abundant renewable aromatic resource on Earth, is being utilized for producing bioproducts to support sustainable development. Studies on lignin-based slow-release fertilizer have increased due to its excellent properties in releasing nutrients slowly. By either physically impeding or chemically modifying the nutrients, lignin-based slow-release fertilizers are able to effectively release nutrients, promoting resource utilization and environmental protection.

Biochemical methane potential of Jatropha curcas fruit shell: comparative effect of mechanical, steam explosion and alkaline pretreatments

Gebresilassie Asnake Ewunie et al.

Summary: Jatropha curcas fruit shell (JCFS) can be a potential substrate for biogas production, but suitable pretreatment techniques are needed to enhance its biodegradability and methane yield. Mechanical pretreatment showed the highest methane yield increment, while steam explosion (SE) and alkaline pretreatments also had positive effects, though less effective.

Extraction and Characterization of Cellulose from Agricultural By-Products of Chiang Rai Province, Thailand

Orapan Romruen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cellulose extracted from rice straw, corncob, Phulae pineapple leaves, and Phulae pineapple peels through alkaline extraction and bleaching processes. The highest extraction yield and lowest undesired components were found in the alkaline-extracted cellulose from corncob samples. Microstructure and thermal analysis showed that the alkaline-extracted corncob cellulose had similar properties to commercial cellulose, with higher thermal stability and crystallinity index.

Comparative of alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment using NaOH and Ca(OH)2 and their effects on enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation steps

Perla Araceli Melendez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study found that alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment using NaOH can significantly increase cellulose and holocellulose content of the substrate, as well as the yield of bioethanol production through enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. In terms of alkaline reagent selection, NaOH is more effective than Ca(OH)2.

Valorization of Sugarcane Straw for the Development of Sustainable Biopolymer-Based Composites

Jorge R. Robledo-Ortiz et al.

Summary: In this study, sustainable biocomposites were produced using sugarcane straw as filler/reinforcement, and it was found that PLA, PHB, and PHBV biocomposites maintained the same impact strength as the neat matrices even with the addition of 40 wt.% of sugarcane straw. On the other hand, Green-PE biocomposites showed an increase in flexural and tensile modulus at all fiber contents.
