Recyclable, Fire-Resistant, Superstrong, and Reversible Ionic Polyurea-Based Adhesives

Xu Ou et al.

Summary: In this study, a recyclable, nonflammable, superstrong, and reversible adhesive was synthesized and characterized via the polycondensation of CO2 and an amino-functionalized ionic liquid. The resulting CO2-sourced ionic polyurea (CIPUa) showed higher shear strength, excellent nonflammability, and antibacterial ability compared to commercial hot-melt adhesives and isocyanate-derived nonionic polyurea. CIPUa also demonstrated facile degradation in ZnSO4 aqueous solution and can be recycled into fresh CIPUa. This study provides an effective strategy for designing sustainable CO2-sourced ionic polymers with multiple functions.

Cardanol-based adhesive with reduced formaldehyde emission to produce particleboards with waste from bean crops

Douglas Lamounier Faria et al.

Summary: Recently, the reduction of free formaldehyde emission in particleboard has been studied to address environmental and health concerns. One viable solution is to use adhesives made from natural sources, such as cardanol-formaldehyde, which is produced from cashew nut liquid. This study successfully produced particleboard using cardanol-formaldehyde as an alternative to urea formaldehyde, and showed a significant reduction in formaldehyde emission.

Preparation and characterization of urea-formaldehyde adhesives modified with glyoxalated tannin

Gaoxiang Xu et al.

Summary: Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins are important adhesives for wood-based panels, but they lack water resistance and emit formaldehyde. This study used glyoxal to activate bayberry tannin and modify UF resins. The addition of glyoxalated tannin effectively decreased formaldehyde emission and improved bonding performance. The modified resin met the requirements of the Chinese National Standard.

Influence of Lignin Content and Pressing Time on Plywood Properties Bonded with Cold-Setting Adhesive Based on Poly (Vinyl Alcohol), Lignin, and Hexamine

Muhammad Adly Rahandi Lubis et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the addition of 10% and 15% lignin content in the adhesive resulted in better cohesion strength compared to that with 20% lignin content. However, statistical analysis revealed that using 20% lignin in the adhesive and a cold-pressing time of 24 h could produce plywood comparable to control polyurethane resins. This eco-friendly plywood bonded with PVOH-lignin-hexamine-based adhesive using cold pressing showed promising potential as an alternative to conventional plywood production.
