Behavior of the Flexural Strength of Hemp/Polypropylene Composites: Evaluation of the Intrinsic Flexural Strength of Untreated Hemp Strands

Maria E. Vallejos et al.

Summary: The growing demand for plant fiber-reinforced composites presents opportunities to compete against glass fiber-reinforced composites. This study focuses on the production and flexural strength of composites made from polypropylene and hemp strands, using maleic anhydride-grafted PP as a compatibilizer. The calculations and results suggest that the use of MAPP at a dosage of 0.06 g per gram of fiber achieved the maximum enhancement in flexural strength.

Bio-Polyethylene Composites Based on Sugar Cane and Curaua Fiber: An Experimental Study

Gustavo Henrique de Almeida Barbalho et al.

Summary: By adding Curaua fiber treated with 5% sodium hydroxide to high-density biopolyethylene, using polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride as a compatibilizer, the crystallinity is reduced, fracture toughness is improved, and specific properties such as modulus and maximum bending stress are enhanced. These findings are important for achieving more sustainable and environmentally friendly manufacturing of automotive products without compromising processability.

Evaluation of the Interface Strength in the Abaca-Fiber-Reinforced Bio-Polyethylene Composites

Faust Seculi et al.

Summary: Bio-based polymers can meet the demands of society and regulations to minimize environmental impact, especially for companies seeking a smooth transition with less uncertainty. By using BioPE as the matrix, similar to HDPE, abaca-fiber-reinforced composites were obtained and compared with commercial glass-fiber-reinforced HDPE. Micromechanical models were employed to estimate the interface strength and tensile strength of the reinforcements. The addition of 8 wt.% coupling agent improved the interface strength of biocomposites, resulting in tensile properties comparable to commercial glass-fiber-reinforced HDPE composites.

Comparative Evaluation of the Stiffness of Abaca-Fiber-Reinforced Bio-Polyethylene and High Density Polyethylene Composites

Faust Seculi et al.

Summary: The use of bio-based matrices and natural fibers as reinforcement is a strategy to obtain materials with competitive mechanical properties, costs, and environmental impacts. In this study, composites reinforced with abaca fibers and different matrices are prepared and tested. The results show that bio-polyethylene as a matrix can provide slightly higher mechanical properties than polyethylene. It is possible to obtain fully bio-based composites with mechanical properties similar to partially bio-based polyolefin or glass fiber-reinforced polyolefin.

Evaluation of the Strength of the Interface for Abaca Fiber Reinforced Hdpe and Biope Composite Materials, and Its Influence over Tensile Properties

Faust Seculi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tensile properties of abaca-reinforced HDPE and BioPE composites. The strength of the interface between the matrix and reinforcement has a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the composite material. By using a coupling agent, the strength of the interface can be increased. The results show that the addition of 8 wt% coupling agent noticeably improves the tensile strength of the composites and the interface. The use of bio-based matrices offers the potential to reduce environmental impact and obtain fully bio-based composites, which can replace oil-based matrices.

Stiffening Potential of Lignocellulosic Fibers in Fully Biobased Composites: The Case of Abaca Strands, Spruce TMP Fibers, Recycled Fibers from ONP, and Barley TMP Fibers

Ferran Serra-Parareda et al.

Summary: This study focuses on using different types of natural fibers to produce biocomposites, with at least the matrix or reinforcement phases obtained from natural and renewable resources. The stiffness, deformation characteristics, and intrinsic modulus of the reinforcements were evaluated using macromechanics and micromechanics analyses, comparing the results to conventional synthetic composites reinforced with glass fibers. The study also explores the potential of using natural fibers in specific properties or applications.

A brief review on the effect of alkali treatment on mechanical properties of various natural fiber reinforced polymer composites

V. Lakshmi Narayana et al.

Summary: In recent years, research has been actively conducted on the development of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites. Despite the numerous advantages of natural fibers, limitations due to factors such as poor wettability and interfacial bonding persist. Chemical treatment, such as mercerization or alkali treatment, has been shown to improve the mechanical properties of these composites and enhance interfacial bonding.
