Chitosan Based Materials in Cosmetic Applications: A Review

Karolina Kulka et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the properties and recent developments in the application of chitosan and chitosan-based materials in cosmetics. Chitosan, a polysaccharide derived from chitin, is mainly extracted from cell walls in fungi and the exoskeletons of arthropods. Its natural humectant and moisturizing effects on the skin, as well as its role as a rheology modifier, have attracted attention from both academia and the cosmetic industry. The review covers the structure of chitosan, its sources in the cosmetic industry, and its role in cosmetics. Future applications of chitosan-based materials in cosmetics are also discussed.

In Vitro and In Silico Characterization of Curcumin-Loaded Chitosan-PVA Hydrogels: Antimicrobial and Potential Wound Healing Activity

Hitesh Chopra et al.

Summary: Curcumin-based hydrogel system with antimicrobial activity and wound healing potential was developed and evaluated in vitro and in silico. The hydrogel showed antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. In silico studies revealed good binding energy scores and significant interaction of curcumin components with key residues of inflammatory proteins, indicating its potential for wound healing. Further in vivo experiments are needed to assess the clinical efficacy of the hydrogel films.

Chitosan for food packaging: Recent advances in active and intelligent films

Maria Florez et al.

Summary: The massive use of petroleum-based plastics in food packaging has led to serious environmental issues, prompting the need to develop biodegradable polymer packaging. Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide with non-toxic, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties, is considered a promising material for food packaging. Recent studies have evaluated the potential of active and/or intelligent chitosan-based films in improving food preservation and monitoring. The addition of active compounds has been shown to enhance the mechanical, barrier and functional properties of chitosan films, with potential applications in antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

Formulation of pH-sensitive aminated chitosan-gelatin crosslinked hydrogel for oral drug delivery

Ahmed Mohamed Omer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop efficient pH-sensitive hydrogel based on aminated chitosan (AmCs) and gelatin (Gel) biopolymers for oral drug delivery. The developed AmCs-Gel crosslinked hydrogel displayed variable pH-sensitive swelling profiles and showed acceptable biodegradability with no cellular toxicity, suggesting their applicability as pH-sensitive oral drug carriers. Adjusting the ratios of AmCs and Gel can achieve variable drug release and loading efficiency.

Rutin prevents tau pathology and neuroinflammation in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Xiao-ying Sun et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that rutin could inhibit tau aggregation and tau oligomer-induced cytotoxicity, reduce the production of proinflammatory cytokines, protect neuronal morphology from toxic tau oligomers, and promote microglial uptake of extracellular tau oligomers. In a Tau-P301S mouse model, rutin also reduced pathological tau levels, regulated tau hyperphosphorylation, suppressed gliosis and neuroinflammation, prevented microglial synapse engulfment, and rescued synapse loss, resulting in a significant improvement of cognition. These findings suggest that rutin is a promising drug candidate for Alzheimer's disease treatment by targeting both tau and amyloid beta pathology.
