Spectroscopic ellipsometry of very rough surfaces

Subiao Bian et al.

Summary: This work expands the use of spectroscopic ellipsometry to surfaces with roughness that is similar to or larger than the wavelength of the incident light. By using a custom-built spectroscopic ellipsometer and varying the angle of incidence, we were able to differentiate between the diffusely scattered and specularly reflected components. Our findings demonstrate that measuring the diffuse component at specular angles is highly beneficial for ellipsometry analysis, as its response is equivalent to that of a smooth material. This allows for accurate determination of the optical constants in materials with extremely rough surfaces. Our results have the potential to broaden the scope and utility of the spectroscopic ellipsometry technique.

Improved Molecular Ordering in a Ternary Blend Enables All-Polymer Solar Cells over 18% Efficiency

Yunhao Cai et al.

Summary: Although all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) have great commercial potential, their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) lag behind small molecule acceptor-based counterparts. Achieving optimized morphology and high molecular ordering in all-polymer blends is challenging due to competition between the crystallinity of the polymer donor and acceptor during film formation. In this study, a ternary strategy is employed to modulate the morphology and molecular crystallinity of an all-polymer blend, resulting in improved PCEs and performance.

Modulation of optical, photophysical and electrical properties of poly(3-hexylthiophene) via Gd:CdS nanoparticles

Mohd Taukeer Khan et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of Gadolinium (Gd) doped cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanoparticles on the properties of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin films was investigated. The results showed that the absorption spectra of P3HT thin films red-shifted and the energy bandgap slightly decreased with the incorporation of Gd:CdS nanoparticles. The optical constants of the films decreased with increasing concentrations of Gd:CdS nanoparticles. The photoluminescence intensity of the hybrid films was lower than that of pristine P3HT, and additional bands corresponding to emission from Gd:CdS nanoparticles were observed. The electrical resistivity and mobility of the films decreased for hybrid films, while the charge carrier concentration and sheet resistance increased.

Organic Solar Cell With Efficiency Over 20% and VOC Exceeding 2.1 V Enabled by Tandem With All-Inorganic Perovskite and Thermal Annealing-Free Process

Xiaoyu Gu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a 2-terminal monolithic perovskite/organic tandem solar cell (TSC) configuration, which incorporates wide bandgap all-inorganic perovskites as front cell absorber and organic blend as rear cell absorber, to extend the absorption range of organic solar cells (OSCs) into high-energy photon region. By optimizing the electron transporting layer and interface structure, high open-circuit voltage and charge transport efficiency are achieved. The remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) obtained in this study highlights the potential of this strategy to improve the efficiency of OSCs.

High-Efficiency Ternary Organic Solar Cells with a Good Figure-of-Merit Enabled by Two Low-Cost Donor Polymers

Ruijie Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, we fabricated ternary organic solar cells with high efficiency and decent performance by combining two donor polymers using a simple synthesis method. Our results indicate that the optimal morphology of the ternary blend is achieved through the coupling and competition between PTQ10 and PTVT-T, leading to efficient charge transport and suppressed bimolecular recombination. Furthermore, the optimized solvent-vapor-assisted casting method improved the efficiency of the optimal system to 19.11%.

On the Understandings of Dielectric Constant and Its Impacts on the Photovoltaic Efficiency in Organic Solar Cells

Zihao Fu et al.

Summary: Dielectric constant is a crucial parameter affecting the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells, and increasing ε of bulk heterojunctions can reduce the impact of charge-transfer states and bimolecular recombination on OSC performance. Current understandings on the impacts of ε on exciton dissociation and voltage losses in OSCs are well-established, with efforts to modify the dielectric properties of OSC materials ongoing through synthetic approaches.
