Fine-tune of lignin properties by its fractionation with a sequential organic solvent extraction

Nagore Izaguirre et al.

Summary: This study obtained different lignins using two extraction methods from the same raw material, with the goal of fractionating them to obtain lignin fractions with specific structures and properties. The environmental friendly solvent sequence was designed based on health and safety assessments, and various analytical techniques were used to characterize the obtained fractions. The study showed an effective method for obtaining homogeneous lignins with specific properties depending on the solvent and molecular weight, with different lignin fractions having specific target applications.

Py-GC/MS study of prot lignin with cobalt impregnated titania, ceria and zirconia catalysts

Avnish Kumar et al.

Summary: In the current study, Py-GC/MS analysis was used to characterize the structure and composition of evolving gas from prot lignin. Different catalysts showed significant impact on the type and yield of pyrolysis products, with Co/CeO2 promoting the formation of S-type phenolics at 300 degrees C and Co/TiO2 enhancing the production of H-type phenolics at 600 degrees C.

Characterization of Organosolv Birch Lignins: Toward Application-Specific Lignin Production

Petter Paulsen Thoresen et al.

Summary: The extraction of lignin from silver birch under varying process conditions results in lignins with characteristic bonding motifs. High ethanol content extraction generates low molecular weight lignins suitable for producing free phenolics, while higher acid catalyst content leads to oxidation of side chains and the potential production of lignins with various applications. Increasing the acid catalyst content generates lignin with potential applications such as antioxidants, carbon fiber, nanoparticles, and water remediation.

Structural Features of Cork Dioxane Lignin from Quercus suber L.

Diana G. Branco et al.

Summary: The dioxane lignin isolated from extractives- and suberin-free cork was found to be mainly of the syringyl/guaiacyl type with a small proportion of p-hydroxyphenyl units. Ether bonds such as beta-O-4' and 4-O-5' were the most abundant in the detected lignin structures, and ferulates were the only cinnamic structure present in the cork dioxane lignin.
