Antibiotic use by backyard food animal producers in Ecuador: a qualitative study

William F. Waters et al.

Summary: Backyard food animal producers in the Ecuadorian highlands generally do not use antibiotics while rearing small batches of animals and poultry for predominantly non-commercial household consumption. Instead, they rely on low-cost traditional veterinary remedies. These practices are informed by their Andean history of agriculture and a belief system whereby physical activity is a holistic lifestyle through which people maintain their health by participating in the physical and spiritual environment.

The global prevalence and trend of human intestinal carriage of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in the community

Yihienew M. Bezabih et al.

Summary: There has been a significant increase in the intestinal carriage rate of ESBL E. coli in the community globally over the past 20 years, with the highest rates observed in South-East Asia and the lowest in Europe. Prevention of its spread may require new therapeutic and public health strategies.

Liseth Salinas et al.

Summary: This study reveals a dynamic horizontal transfer of AMR genes and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) within the E. coli community, indicating that drug-resistant bacteria and ESBL genes can move relatively large distances among domestic animals and children in semirural communities near Quito, Ecuador.

Do dog-human bonds influence movements of free-ranging dogs in wilderness?

Lorena Saavedra-Aracena et al.

Summary: The study found that 39% of free-ranging village dogs in southern Chile had over 5% of their locations in natural areas, with only three dogs going on overnight excursions. Dogs tended to have larger home ranges, move farther away from home or access nature more intensively when they exhibited more exploration, more intensive greetings to their owners, and more passive behaviors in the presence of their owners.

Summary: This study summarized the effects of interventions reducing antimicrobial use in food-producing animals on the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in bacteria. The results showed a significant positive effect of intervention in reducing the prevalence of ARGs, with variations depending on the specific genes involved.
