The oft-overlooked cardiovascular complications of inflammatory bowel disease

Sara Massironi et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other comorbidities. IBD patients are at increased risk of developing atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and myocarditis. Certain medications have shown a protective effect against arterial events, but increased risk of venous thromboembolism and major cardiovascular events has been associated with specific drugs. CVD risk is slightly elevated during flares and proper risk profiling and management are important.

A nationwide cohort study of the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease in Sweden from 1990 to 2014

Anders Forss et al.

Summary: The study in Sweden revealed that the incidence of IBD in all subtypes increased from 1990 to 2001, followed by a gradual decline. Incidence rates for IBD, UC, and IBD-U were higher in males, while CD had a higher incidence rate in females. The lifetime risk of being diagnosed with IBD was approximately 2.5% for both sexes.

Gut microbiota, dysbiosis and atrial fibrillation. Arrhythmogenic mechanisms and potential clinical implications

Monika Gawalko et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that imbalances in gut microbiota composition may contribute to atrial fibrillation (AF), a condition where the heart beats irregularly. The gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms that can be influenced by factors such as diet and drugs, in addition to individual characteristics. Research explores the potential bidirectional relationship between AF and gut microbiota, examining how the microbiota's metabolites could affect AF development. Additionally, investigations into modifying gut microbiota through pharmacological and dietary interventions are discussed as potential methods to prevent AF progression.

Autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular risk: a population-based study on 19 autoimmune diseases and 12 cardiovascular diseases in 22 million individuals in the UK

Nathalie Conrad et al.

Summary: This population-based study examined the association between autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular disease. The results showed that patients with autoimmune diseases have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, and this risk increases with the number of autoimmune diseases present, especially in younger patients.

Summary: This article discusses the association between COVID-19 and arrhythmic events, highlighting the overlooked role of systemic inflammation in the pathogenesis of cardiac arrhythmias. The unexpectedly high prevalence of arrhythmic events in COVID-19 patients emphasizes the relevance of inflammation in the development of cardiac arrhythmias.

International consensus on the prevention of venous and arterial thrombotic events in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Pablo A. Olivera et al.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of venous and arterial thrombotic events. This Evidence-Based Guideline provides 19 recommendations for clinical practice, including the use of thromboprophylaxis during hospitalization and aiming for deep remission to reduce risk. Therapies for IBD may modulate this risk, and antitumour necrosis factor agents could potentially reduce the risk of thrombotic events.
