Shape-Controlled Synthesis of Platinum-Based Nanocrystals and Their Electrocatalytic Applications in Fuel Cells

Can Li et al.

Summary: To achieve environmentally friendly energy conversion with carbon neutrality, the innovation of electrocatalysts is crucial for harnessing renewable resources. Pt-based nanocrystals (NCs) have been recognized as promising candidates for efficient catalysis in hydrogen- and hydrocarbon-based fuel cells. In this review, we discuss the significant advancements in shape-controlled Pt and Pt-based NCs, and their applications in fuel cells. We highlight the precise control of morphology in colloidal systems, as well as the development of shape-controlled Pt, Pt-alloy, Pt-based core@shell NCs, Pt-based nanocages, and Pt-based intermetallic compounds. Case studies on typical reactions (oxygen reduction at the cathode and small molecule oxidation at the anode) are presented to demonstrate the enhanced performance of shape-controlled Pt-based nanocatalysts. Finally, we provide an outlook on the potential challenges and future prospects of shape-controlled nanocatalysts.
