Bacterial pathogens and in-hospital mortality in revision surgery for periprosthetic joint infection of the hip and knee: analysis of 346 patients

Summary: This clinical investigation examined patients who underwent revision surgery for periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The study found that infections are a common reason for revision after joint replacement surgeries, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the most common pathogens. This has important implications for treatment and antibiotic selection.

Summary: This prospective study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of nuclear imaging with FDG PET/CT, dual-isotope WBC/bone marrow SPECT/CT, and Tc-99m-HDP SPECT/CT for patients with chronic problems related to knee or hip prostheses. The results showed that dual-isotope WBC/bone marrow SPECT/CT had a high diagnostic performance in confirming chronic prosthetic joint infection, while FDG PET/CT had lower accuracy.

Summary: This meta-analysis showed that FDG PET/CT plays an important role in the diagnosis of PJI with high sensitivity and specificity, but cannot be used for confirmation or exclusion of PJI. There was significant heterogeneity among the included studies, and further research is needed.

Application of 68Ga-citrate PET/CT for differentiating periprosthetic joint infection from aseptic loosening after joint replacement surgery

Summary: This study evaluated the utility of 68Ga-citrate PET/CT in differentiating PJI and AL, and compared it with 99mTc-MDP bone scan. The results showed that AC60 minutes and non-AC60 minutes of PET/CT had the same highest sensitivity and specificity, and AC60 minutes combined with SPECT/CT could further improve diagnostic efficiency.
