Uncovering Polysubstance Use Patterns in Canadian Youth with Machine Learning on Longitudinal COMPASS Data

Polysubstance Use in Early Adulthood: Patterns and Developmental Precursors in an Urban Cohort

Summary: Polysubstance use, the simultaneous or sequential use of different psychoactive substances, is associated with increased risks of health problems and social impairments. This study used long-term longitudinal data to examine the prevalence and continuation of polysubstance use from adolescence to early adulthood, different patterns of polysubstance use in early adulthood, and childhood risk factors for polysubstance use. The findings show an increase in polysubstance use during this period, with more than one-third of participants reporting polysubstance use at age 20. Four classes of polysubstance use were identified, each with different substance combinations. Risk factors for polysubstance use included sensation-seeking and exposure to others' substance use during childhood.

Exploring the dynamic transitions of polysubstance use patterns among Canadian youth using Latent Markov Models on COMPASS data
