Polysubstance Use in Early Adulthood: Patterns and Developmental Precursors in an Urban Cohort

Annekatrin Steinhoff et al.

Summary: Polysubstance use, the simultaneous or sequential use of different psychoactive substances, is associated with increased risks of health problems and social impairments. This study used long-term longitudinal data to examine the prevalence and continuation of polysubstance use from adolescence to early adulthood, different patterns of polysubstance use in early adulthood, and childhood risk factors for polysubstance use. The findings show an increase in polysubstance use during this period, with more than one-third of participants reporting polysubstance use at age 20. Four classes of polysubstance use were identified, each with different substance combinations. Risk factors for polysubstance use included sensation-seeking and exposure to others' substance use during childhood.

Frequency of adolescent cannabis smoking and vaping in the United States: Trends, disparities and concurrent substance use, 2017-19

Katherine M. Keyes et al.

Summary: Among adolescents in the United States, there is a decline in cannabis use without vaping and an increase in cannabis use with vaping. Frequent cannabis vaping has shown a consistent increase across almost all adolescent demographic groups. Cannabis use is highly associated with other substance use among US adolescents.

Exploring the dynamic transitions of polysubstance use patterns among Canadian youth using Latent Markov Models on COMPASS data

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning techniques to explore the dynamics of polysubstance use patterns among Canadian secondary school students and identified factors that influence transitions between different use patterns over time. The study found that most students remained in the same substance use subgroup over time, with transitions generally moving towards higher use patterns. Factors such as truancy, age, race, breakfast habits, allowance, number of smoking friends, etc., were found to impact the transitions in polysubstance use patterns among youth.

Changes in cannabis use modes among Canadian youth across recreational cannabis legalization: Data from the COMPASS prospective cohort study

Alexandra M. E. Zuckermann et al.

Summary: Research found that multi-modal cannabis use increased among Canadian youth, with associations with other substance use and depressive symptoms suggesting clustering of additional harms. Screening for this use pattern may help identify high-risk substance use and should be considered in harm reduction programming design.

An analysis of e-cigarette and polysubstance use patterns of adolescents in Bangkok, Thailand

Bang-on Thepthien et al.

Summary: Adolescents in Thailand have high prevalence of e-cigarette use, with a majority of users using other addictive substances like alcohol. Factors associated with e-cigarette use include being male, having low academic achievement, having smoking friends, being persuaded by close friends, having had sexual experience, and having close friends who drink alcohol. Extensive screening and prevention efforts for e-cigarette consumption and other addictive substances are important for adolescent health.
