This review presents a theoretical model of self-compassion and discusses the methodology of self-compassion research. It also reviews empirical studies showing that self-compassion is beneficial for mental and physical well-being, dispelling common myths about self-compassion.

Influence of perceived discrimination on problematic smartphone use among Chinese deaf and hard-of-hearing students: Serial mediating effects of sense of security and social avoidance

Summary: This study explored the association between perceived discrimination and problematic smartphone use (PSU) among deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in China, and found that sense of security and social avoidance played mediating roles in this association. The results suggest that discriminatory experiences are related to a lower sense of security and higher social avoidance among DHH students, which may lead to PSU. These findings have important implications for the prevention and intervention of PSU among DHH students.

Self-compassion and social anxiety in late adolescence: Contributions of self-reflection and insight

Summary: This study aimed to examine the moderating effects of self-reflection and insight on the relationship between self-compassion and social anxiety. The findings showed that late adolescents with high levels of self-compassion and self-reflection were less likely to experience social anxiety, while those with low self-compassion and high self-reflection reported more social anxiety symptoms. Moreover, late adolescents who were both more self-compassionate and had higher levels of insight were more protected against social anxiety. Self-reflection and insight may serve as relevant mechanisms for understanding how psychological interventions can affect social anxiety symptoms in late adolescents.

Child Maltreatment and Suicide Ideation in Rural China: The Roles of Self-compassion and School Belonging

Summary: Child maltreatment is a significant risk factor for suicide behavior in China, and rural children have a higher prevalence of maltreatment history compared to urban children. Emotional abuse, neglect, and physical abuse were found to be positively associated with suicide ideation through decreased self-compassion. Furthermore, school belonging was identified as a moderating factor in the relationship between emotional abuse and suicide ideation. Thus, interventions focusing on self-compassion and school belonging are essential for mental health programs targeting rural adolescents with child maltreatment experiences.
