The relationship between substance use disorder and gambling disorder: A nationwide longitudinal health registry study

Tony Leino et al.

Summary: This study examines the co-morbidity and temporal relationship between substance abuse disorders (SUDs) and gambling disorder (GD). The results show that 22.5% of GD patients were also diagnosed with SUD, while only 0.7% of SUD patients were also diagnosed with GD. The risk of developing the other addictive disorder depends on the nature of the first disorder and there are sex differences in the risk trajectories over time.

Opioid-induced microglia reactivity modulates opioid reward, analgesia, and behavior

Jacob M. Green et al.

Summary: Opioid-induced microglia reactivity can affect opioid reward and analgesic processes, leading to neurocognitive impairment in opioid addicted individuals. These effects are mediated by opioid metabolites acting on TLR4 receptors, resulting in increased release of inflammatory molecules. The resulting imbalance between the impulsive and executive systems may contribute to addiction-related behaviors.

The SEEKING Drive and Its Fixation: A Neuro-Psycho-Evolutionary Approach to the Pathology of Addiction

Antonio Alcaro et al.

Summary: Neuro-ethological studies by Panksepp and colleagues have shown that the activity of the mesolimbic dopaminergic system can lead to an emotional disposition towards seeking and exploring, which can become fixated on certain obsessive habits in pathological addiction. This loss of versatility and natural predisposition can result in a disinterest in other activities. The tendency to develop addictive behavior is attributed to a deficit in the tonic endogenous activity of the SEEKING system, which can be conditioned by situations providing immediate rewards.
