Analysing the Impact of Land Subsidence on the Flooding Risk: Evaluation Through InSAR and Modelling

Maria I. Navarro-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study compared two different scenarios of land subsidence in flood event models for 1992 and 2016. It found that there was a 2.04 km2 increase in flooded areas with water depths exceeding 0.7 m over the 14-year period. These findings were used to create a flood risk map and assess the economic flood risk.

Flood hazard assessment in Yemen using a novel hybrid approach of Grey Wolf and Levenberg Marquardt optimizers

Ahmed M. Al-Areeq et al.

Summary: This study used geoprocessing and computational techniques to map flood susceptibility in the Qaa'Jahran watersheds in Dhamar, Yemen. The GWO_LM_ANN model, trained using a hybrid algorithm, outperformed other machine learning models, achieving high precision, sensitivity, specificity, F1 score, accuracy, and AUC. The findings have significant implications for disaster preparedness and response, offering targeted and efficient non-structural solutions.

LISFLOOD-FP 8.1: new GPU-accelerated solvers for faster fluvial/pluvial flood simulations

Mohammad Kazem Sharifian et al.

Summary: This paper introduces new releases on LISFLOOD-FP 8.1 for parallel flood simulations. The parallelized ACC solver has been implemented on GPUs to improve computational efficiency and a new non-uniform grid version has been introduced. The non-uniform solver generates grids using multiresolution analysis and allows proper adaptation of land use. The GPU implementation of both uniform and non-uniform solvers shows significant speed improvements compared to the CPU predecessor.

Estimate earth fissure hazard based on machine learning in the Qa' Jahran Basin, Yemen

Yousef A. Al-Masnay et al.

Summary: In this study, four advanced machine learning algorithms were used to assess the hazard susceptibility of earth fissures, with random forest algorithm showing the best performance. The findings can assist decision-makers in land management planning and protecting society and the ecosystem.

2D hydrodynamic approach supporting evaluations of hydrological response in small watersheds: Implications for lag time estimation

Giuseppe Barbero et al.

Summary: The use of integrated flood models, which simulate the hydrodynamic and hydrological response to rainfall events, is gaining interest in the literature. This study focuses on lag time estimation and examines the variability of lag time in small basins using a 2D-SWEs model. The hydrologic response of small catchments is described by characteristic times influencing the hydrodynamic response. The proposed approach is validated using synthetic rainfall-runoff scenarios and observed data, showing reasonably good agreement with estimations of the lag time.

Analysis of two sources of variability of basin outflow hydrographs computed with the 2D shallow water model Iber: Digital Terrain Model and unstructured mesh size

Gonzalo Garcia-Alen et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of Digital Terrain Model (DTM) accuracy and resolution on the results and runtime of a hydrological model. The results suggest a correlation between the vertical accuracy of the DTM and its horizontal resolution.

Impact of temporal rainfall patterns on flash floods in Hue City, Vietnam

Dengrui Mu et al.

Summary: Urban flooding is a persistent issue, particularly in developing countries with weak infrastructure and increasing stress from climate change and human activities. A study in the tropical rainforest city of Hue, Vietnam, simulated flood-water depth and inundation area under four designed rainfall patterns. The results showed that the timing of peak rainfall in different patterns influenced the water depth and extent of inundation.

The Performance of Physically Based and Conceptual Hydrologic Models: A Case Study for Makkah Watershed, Saudi Arabia

Ahmed M. Al-Areeq et al.

Summary: This study used satellite rainfall estimates to simulate flooding events in a rapidly urbanizing watershed in Saudi Arabia and compared the performance of two hydrologic models. The results showed that distributed models can effectively capture the effects of complex topography and land use variability in the watershed.

Rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) Curves: Effects of Uncertainty on Flood Protection and Runoff Quantification in Southwestern Saudi Arabia

Ahmed AL-Areeq et al.

Summary: The study investigates rainfall and runoff in five areas of southwestern Saudi Arabia and finds inadequate infrastructure to prevent floods. Different methods for calculating depth-duration relationships show variability in IDF relationships, which can impact flood control measures and runoff collection. Long-term monitoring and studying smaller areas are recommended to understand and control flash floods better.

Physically-based, distributed hydrologic model for Makkah watershed using GPM satellite rainfall and ground rainfall stations

Ahmed M. Al-Areeq et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand flooding in a 1,725-km(2) arid catchment in Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia, using a physically based hydrologic model calibrated and validated with limited ground observations and high-resolution satellite rainfall products. Significant differences were found in rainfall estimates from different IMERG products, leading to the development of a method to adjust biases using ground observations. The study highlights the vulnerability of densely urbanized areas in flood zones and the importance of accurate rainfall data for flood prediction and management.
