Resilience and young people's brain structure, function and connectivity: A systematic review

Steve Eaton et al.

Summary: Although negative early life experiences are associated with increased risk of developing psychopathology, some young individuals exposed to childhood adversity demonstrate psychological resilience. This systematic review of neuroimaging studies in youth provides preliminary evidence that resilience is associated with structural, functional, and connectivity differences in the brain. However, there is heterogeneity in the definition and assessment of resilience, and the number of studies is limited. Future research should adopt longitudinal designs, broader conceptualizations of resilience, and a dimensional approach to psychopathology.

Neurophysiological dynamics for psychological resilience: A view from the temporal axis

Noriya Watanabe et al.

Summary: When individuals face adversity, their brain and body work together to adapt, a process known as psychological resilience. Recent studies have found that differences in psychological resilience can be characterized by differences in the temporal dynamics of neurophysiological resilience. This review summarizes the temporal dynamics of neurophysiological resilience and proposes the exploration of brain-wide oscillatory activities using fMRI and EEG techniques to address the remaining gaps in understanding.

Psycho-social factors associated with mental resilience in the Corona lockdown

Ilya M. Veer et al.

Summary: The study explored factors that influence psychological resilience, including positive appraisal style, perceived social support, and the ability to recover from stress. The findings indicated that positive appraisal and stress response recovery were the most important resilience factors, which can be targeted in mental health interventions. This research identifies modifiable protective factors that generalize across major socio-demographic categories.

Is it time to put rest to rest?

Emily S. Finn

Summary: The resting state paradigm in human neuroimaging represents a shift from traditional task-based studies, but the value of exploring rest further is uncertain. While rest remains dominant in many subfields, data from tasks have shown benefits and insights into both mind and brain. Emphasizing grounded experiments over rest could accelerate progress in human neuroscience.

High Thought Control Ability, High Resilience: The Effect of Temporal Cortex and Insula Connectivity

Liang Shi et al.

Summary: This study found a significant positive correlation between resilience and thought control ability, with the functional connectivity of the temporal cortex-insula playing a significant mediating role in the association between the two. It suggests that individuals with high TCA exhibit high levels of resilience ability through robust cognitive control on unwanted thoughts. These results shed novel insights into the close relationship between resilience and TCA and the underlying neural mechanism.

Integrative psycho-biophysiological markers in predicting psychological resilience

Way K. W. Lau et al.

Summary: This study examined the role of HPA and parasympathetic nervous systems in emotion regulation and stress coping, and found that these physiological features can enhance the prediction power of resilience. Results indicated that positive and negative affects, HRV during the anticipatory phase of stress, and the cortisol/DHEA ratio were significant predictors of resilience. Adding biophysiological features increased the prediction power of resilience by 1.2-fold compared to psychological features alone.
