Increased foot strike variability during turning in Parkinson's disease patients with freezing of gait

Lakshmi Pillai et al.

Summary: This study found that turning is a common trigger for freezing episodes in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), which can lead to falls and fractures and decreased quality of life. The study also found increased foot-strike contact variability during turning and abnormal spatiotemporal gait measures in PD patients with Freezing of Gait (FOG). Developing targeted therapies to address these issues could help decrease episodes of freezing of gait.

Combined Subthalamic and Nigral Stimulation Modulates Temporal Gait Coordination and Cortical Gait-Network Activity in Parkinson's Disease

Jonas R. Wagner et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that STN+SN DBS is more effective than conventional STN DBS in improving gait impairment in Parkinson's disease patients. The cortical activity of patients during resting and effective stepping shows excessive synchronization in certain frequency bands, which is reduced by DBS. Different patterns of cortical activity are observed during freezing episodes with STN DBS and STN+SN DBS.
