The decomposition processes and return of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus of Phragmites australis litter with different detritus amount

Ce Xu et al.

Summary: Litter decomposition is crucial for carbon and nutrient cycling in wetland ecosystems. The management of Phragmites australis is of great importance in regulating this biogeochemical cycle. This study found that the decomposition process of Phragmites litter is more influenced by the stoichiometric ratios in the surrounding water than in the litter itself. Detritus amount does not significantly affect the decomposition process of Phragmites litter. These findings provide valuable insights for further research on wetland ecosystem management.

Physically separated soil organic matter pools as indicators of carbon and nitrogen change under long-term fertilization in a Chinese Mollisol

Adnan Mustafa et al.

Summary: This study successfully isolated the active, slow and passive pools of soil organic matter through long-term fertilization. The results showed that fertilization increased the sizes of soil organic carbon and nitrogen pools, with the best effect observed under the use of 1.5 times the normal dose of manure and inorganic fertilizer. The study concluded that long-term application of manure and inorganic fertilizer is crucial for enhancing carbon and nitrogen sequestration in soil.

Can Wood Ashes of Commonly Planted Tree Species in Ghana be Applied as Fertilizers?

Michael O. Asare et al.

Summary: The study found that the ashes of the studied woody species contain abundant plant nutrients, especially with relatively high releasability of Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Cu, and Zn. Therefore, these ashes can be used as suitable fertilizers in nutrient-deficient soils.

Fractionation of Soil Organic Matter into Labile and Stable Fractions

Marek Kopecky et al.

Summary: The present study aims to test and evaluate the efficiency of a new modified method of organic matter evaluation, which allows the assessment of the quality and quantity of soil organic matter. The results showed that the new method is more sensitive and faster compared to classical methods, and it does not require complex laboratory equipment. Based on these findings and other studies, the modified method may be recommended for practical soil organic matter evaluation.

Heterogeneity of Organic Matter of Aggregates of Protocalcic Chernozems

V. A. Kholodov et al.

Summary: Layers were removed from macroaggregates of Protocalcic Chernozems through successive abrasion, and the effects of particle size and processing time on organic matter quality and molecular structure were investigated. The results showed that particles with 0.5 mm size processed on the rotator for at least 10 hours exhibited favorable properties. In addition, clear differences in organic matter quality and molecular structure were observed between the peripheral and inner parts of the aggregates of the unmanaged fallow.

Impact of environmental factors on the spatiotemporal variability of soil organic matter: a case study in a typical small Mollisol watershed of Northeast China

Wei Hu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatial distribution and temporal variation of soil organic matter (SOM) content and its influencing factors in the Chinese Mollisol region. Results showed moderate variability in SOM content, with significant effects of factors such as slope gradient, slope position, slope aspect, elevations, and TWI. The combination of slope position with TWI was identified as a dominant interaction factor influencing SOM distribution.

Vertical distributions of organic carbon fractions under paddy and forest soils derived from black shales: Implications for potential of long-term carbon storage

Zhilian Qin et al.

Summary: The study found that the contents of LOC, Semi-LOC, and ROC in paddy soils and forest soils decrease significantly with increasing depth. Paddy soils have a lower contribution of LOC to SOC compared to forest soils, while the contribution of ROC to SOC is higher in paddy soils.

The molecular composition of extractable soil microbial compounds and their contribution to soil organic matter vary with soil depth and tree species

Marcel Lorenz et al.

Summary: Recent findings suggest that soil microorganisms play a crucial role in soil organic matter formation and composition. Factors such as litter quality from different tree species and soil depth influence the molecular composition of microbial-derived compounds in the soil. Microbial turnover and composition directly impact the extractable soil organic matter, with microbial sugars being the dominant component in deeper soil layers.

Anastasiia I. Kuznetsova et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationships between vegetation, earthworms, and soil carbon stocks in different forest types in the European part of Russia. It found that carbon stocks in organic layers were associated with low-quality litter, while carbon stocks in mineral layers were related to plant species richness.

The initial mass of residue can regulate the impact of Phragmites australis decomposition on water quality: a case study of a mesocosm experiment in a wetland of North China

Ce Xu et al.

Summary: The impact of plant residue decomposition on wetland water environments was studied in Baiyangdian wetland in North China. Results showed that the initial mass of residue (IMR) of Phragmites only marginally influenced its own decomposition, with TN, TP, COD, and TOC being the most affected water indicators. Changes in water quality were significantly influenced by the decomposition of Phragmites residue, particularly correlated with TOC, cellulose and decomposition rate. Harvest rate of Phragmites above 75% was recommended for optimal water quality management.
