Modelling of the swelling behaviour of a fire retarded material under a cone calorimeter

Manon Fleurotte et al.

Summary: Modelling the swelling behaviour of intumescent materials is important for predicting their pyrolysis process. This study implemented a swelling model in the pyrolysis code Gpyro to predict the behaviour of an EVA/ATH polymer. Unlike previous works, this model does not require density information, making it more predictive. Experimental measurements of sample thickness, mass loss, and back surface temperature were compared with the model predictions, showing good agreement. The model can be extended to other materials.

Strength grading of Chinese poplar wood for structural use following thermal modification

Kong Yue et al.

Summary: Thermal modification can improve wood dimensional stability but decreases certain main mechanical properties. The main mechanical properties of thermally-modified wood decreased with temperatures, except for compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, which increased with temperature (<= 180 degrees C) and was followed by a reduction at >= 190 degrees C. Thermal modification at 180 degrees C was shown to be practical in improving wood properties for structural use.

The effect of agroforestry farming on wood quality and timber industry and its supportation by Horizon 2020

Matyas Bader et al.

Summary: The goal of the European Union's agroforestry plans is to address the timber shortage in Europe due to the increasing demand for hardwoods and declining tropical timber import. This study identifies suitable tree species for agroforestry systems in Europe, assesses their potential as raw materials for the wood industry, and evaluates the quality of wood produced in agroforestry systems. The study also provides insights into the economic outlook for the agroforestry sector and the related primary wood industry in the European Union, taking into account the Horizon 2020 initiative and other key factors.

Nanostructured multifunctional wood hybrids fabricated via in situ mineralization of zinc borate in hierarchical wood structures

Haiyang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study successfully deposited nanosized zinc borate particles in the hierarchical void system of wood through biomineralization, resulting in the fabrication of nanostructured wood hybrids with efficient flame retardancy, smoke suppression, mold resistance, and antitermite activity. The mineralized wood exhibited excellent heat insulation performance, reduced the release of harmful gases and smoke, and had properties of mold resistance and antitermite activity. This study provides a feasible strategy for manufacturing multifunctional wood.

Designing functional wood materials for novel engineering applications

Guido Panzarasa et al.

Summary: Wood has the potential to become a key material for future bio-economy due to its renewability and CO2-storing capacity. Enhanced functionalization treatments can enable wood materials to serve as valid substitutes for less ecofriendly materials, although further research is needed. Recent developments in the design of functional wood materials are highlighted, addressing current limitations and obstacles to implementation.

Densification of timber: a review on the process, material properties, and application

John Paul Cabral et al.

Summary: Timber densification is a process that enhances the structural properties of timber by altering its cellular structure through compression, chemical impregnation, or a combination of both. The density and mechanical properties of the timber can be modified by adjusting parameters such as compression ratio and temperature. The current processes, effects, and potential future directions of timber densification are discussed in this paper.

China's Key Forestry Ecological Development Programs: Implementation, Environmental Impact and Challenges

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: China has implemented key forestry ecological development programs to alleviate environmental issues caused by deforestation, including NFPP, CCFP, DCBT, KSDP, and WCNR. These programs have made significant progress in increasing vegetative coverage, enhancing carbon sequestration, controlling soil erosion, and biodiversity conservation, but a more balanced approach and active involvement of scientific communities are needed for proper implementation and remarkable achievement. The environmental impact of DCBT, KSDP, and WCNR warrant more research attention.
