Summary: The Utrecht Cardiovascular Cohort-Second Manifestations of Arterial Disease (UCC-SMART) Study is an ongoing prospective single-centre cohort study. It aims to assess the determinants and prognosis of cardiovascular disease progression. This article provides an update on the rationale, design, participants, measurements, and findings from 1996 to date.

Association of a Healthy Lifestyle With All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality Among Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes: A Prospective Study in UK Biobank

Han Han et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the association between a healthy lifestyle and all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality among individuals with type 2 diabetes. The results show that a healthy lifestyle, involving seven low-risk factors, is significantly associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and mortality due to cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease, and digestive disease among individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Marlou A. M. Limpens et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the impact of a healthy lifestyle on life expectancy with and without heart failure in a general population. The results showed that an overall healthy lifestyle can have a positive impact on total life expectancy and life expectancy free of heart failure.

Lifestyle changes and kidney function: A 10-year follow-up study in patients with manifest cardiovascular disease

Helena Bleken Ostergaard et al.

Summary: This study found that continuing smoking, recent smoking cessation, and an increase in obesity markers were associated with a steeper decline in kidney function in patients with cardiovascular disease. These results support the importance of encouraging weight loss and smoking cessation in high-risk patients to slow down kidney function decline.

Systematic Review of Physical Activity Trajectories and Mortality in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

Nathalia Gonzalez-Jaramillo et al.

Summary: This study found that maintaining or adopting an active lifestyle can reduce all-cause mortality risk in patients with CHD, especially for those who remained active. The results also suggest that the benefits of past activity in reducing CVD mortality risk may be lost if appropriate physical activity is not maintained.

Lifestyle patterns and incident type 2 diabetes in the Dutch lifelines cohort study

Ming-Jie Duan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify subgroups within a population characterized by different lifestyle patterns, and investigate the association between these patterns and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that lifestyle factors tend to cluster in unique patterns within a diverse population, and these patterns are differentially associated with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Therefore, considering lifestyle patterns is important for the prevention of type 2 diabetes, and tailored prevention strategies targeting multiple lifestyle risk factors may optimize prevention efforts at the population level.

Poor adherence to lifestyle recommendations in patients with coronary heart disease: results from the EUROASPIRE surveys

Dirk De Bacquer et al.

Summary: Despite the high use of cardioprotective medications, many patients with coronary heart disease still have inadequate risk factor control due to poor adherence to healthy lifestyles. Factors contributing to this include smoking habits, obesity, lack of physical activity, and patients' perception of illness. Patients who participated in cardiac rehabilitation programs showed more successful lifestyle modifications. Lack of self-confidence was identified as a major barrier to behavior change for healthier lifestyles.
