Sea Urchin-Like CoS2@WS2/NF Bifunctional Catalyst for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Chenzi Zhu et al.

Summary: Metal sulfides are superior to metal oxide counterparts in terms of electrical conductivity, mechanical and thermal stability, and electrochemical activity. A sea urchin-like CoS2@WS2/NF composite electrode material was synthesized by assembling one-dimensional nanoclusters and three-dimensional microspheres. This unique structure allows for efficient mass transfer and gas release, with one-dimensional nanoclusters facilitating electron transfer and three-dimensional nanospheres providing mechanical support. The bifunctional electrocatalyst exhibits low overpotentials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), demonstrating its excellent performance in water splitting.

Electrochemical Deposited Amorphous Bimetallic Nickle-Iron (Oxy)hydroxides Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Zhichao Xu et al.

Summary: Low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts, particularly metal (oxy)hydroxides, have gained significant attention for their promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. Amorphous electrocatalysts exhibit superior activity and structural flexibility compared to crystalline counterparts, but traditional preparation techniques pose a barrier. In this study, amorphous NiFe (oxy)hydroxides on nickel foam with a large surface area and small charge transfer resistance were fabricated using an electrodeposition technique. The as-fabricated NiFe (oxy)hydroxides (Ni:Fe = 1:3) demonstrated remarkable electrocatalytic activity and stability for OER, outperforming noble metal electrocatalysts (RuO2) and most NiFe-based electrocatalysts with a low overpotential of 245 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 76.9 mV dec(-1). This work provides a facile and effective method for synthesizing metal (oxy)hydroxide catalysts for high-efficiency water splitting.

CuCo-MOF/MoS2 as a High-Performance Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Qi Li et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frame materials (MOFs) create ordered spatial structures and effectively disperse active centers. In this study, CuCo-MOF was prepared and physically mixed with MoS2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The addition of MoS2 reduced MOFs stacking, increased effective contact area, and enhanced catalytic activity. Furthermore, the stability of the composite was improved by the viscosity of MoS2. The good OER performance of CuCo-MOF/MoS2 provides a reference for novel OER catalyst exploration.

Development of Unsupported Ru and Ni Based Oxides with Enhanced Performance for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Media

Franschke A. Soudens et al.

Summary: The high cost of catalyst materials suitable for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) is a major obstacle for commercializing PEMWE technology in the hydrogen economy. This study demonstrates the potential of binary metal oxide catalysts based on Ru and Ni to reduce the cost of the catalyst component. By combining NiO with acid stable RuO2, the performance of the RuO2 catalyst is improved and the overall cost of the catalyst can be reduced. The synthesized metal oxide catalysts show superior performance compared to a state-of-art commercial RuO2 catalyst.

Summary: Encapsulating transition-metal alloyed nanoparticles in graphitic carbon shells and doping non-metallic elements have shown to enhance the catalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER), reducing overpotential and improving the long-term stability. This improvement is attributed to the optimization of Gibbs free energy of OER intermediates, leading to a lower energy input for the rate-determining step.
