Developing slow release fertilizer through in-situ radiation-synthesis of urea-embedded starch-based hydrogels

Fengyi Chen et al.

Summary: A novel method for developing slow-release fertilizers by in-situ radiation-synthesizing urea-embedded starch-based hydrogels was introduced. The effects of irradiation intensity on hydrogels with different AM/starch ratios, concentrations, and urea loading were studied. The structures and performances of the gel were investigated, and the relationships between the gel structures and properties, and release rate were established.

Biodegradable all-cellulose composite hydrogel as eco-friendly and efficient coating material for slow-release MAP fertilizer

Ihsane Kassem et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed a novel coated fertilizer with combined slow release and water retention properties using cellulose hydrogel formulation as the coating material. The coated fertilizer showed improved surface coverage, increased crushing resistance, and a positive impact on soil water retention. Furthermore, the coated fertilizer exhibited extended release durations, with maximal longevities of 12 hours in water and 19-20 days in soil compared to uncoated fertilizer.

3D Bioprinting of Multifunctional Dynamic Nanocomposite Bioinks Incorporating Cu-Doped Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles for Bone Tissue Engineering

Hui Zhu et al.

Summary: Bioprinting has made significant progress in recent years in the fabrication of complex bionic tissues. However, developing cell-laden bioinks with superior physiochemical properties and bio-functionality remains challenging. In this study, a multifunctional nanocomposite bioink was developed using amine-functionalized copper-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles and a hydrogel formulation based on dynamic covalent chemistry. This bioink showed favorable rheological properties, improved shape fidelity, and structural stability for extrusion-based bioprinting. The introduction of aminated particles and the reversible dynamic microenvironment enabled rapid spreading and high survival of embedded cells. The bioprinted scaffolds promoted osteogenic differentiation and angiogenesis of cells without additional growth factors in vitro. These nanocomposite bioinks have great potential for bioprinting complex 3D environments in bone tissue engineering.

Strong fish gelatin hydrogels double crosslinked by transglutaminase and carrageenan

Hongrui Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, strong fish gelatin hydrogels were successfully prepared by double crosslinking gelatin with transglutaminase (TGase) and kappa-carrageenan, resulting in significantly improved mechanical properties and thermal stability. The highest gel strength, compression fracture stress, and storage modulus were achieved when the concentration of TGase was 20 U/g gelatin. The thermal stability of the double crosslinked gelatin hydrogels was attributed to the presence of covalent crosslinks. The effect of TGase concentration on the physical properties and microstructure of the double crosslinked hydrogels was analyzed, and the differences between double crosslinked gelatin hydrogels and gelatin hydrogels single crosslinked by TGase or carrageenan were systematically compared.
