Reconstruction of neocortex: Organelles, compartments, cells, circuits, and activity

Nicholas L. Turner et al.

Summary: This article describes a model reconstructed from electron microscopic images of mouse primary visual cortex, and investigates the relationship between cell organization and function. The study suggests that the connectivity pattern of pyramidal cells is associated with their visual response strength and reliability.

The branching code: A model of actin-driven dendrite arborization

Tomke Sturner et al.

Summary: The cytoskeleton plays a crucial role in defining the dendrite morphologies of neurons. In this study focused on Drosophila larvae, the authors used computational modeling to investigate how actin-modulatory proteins (AMPs) contribute to defining neuronal types. They found that the main branches follow general models based on optimal wiring principles, while the short terminal branches require additional growth programs.

Binary and analog variation of synapses between cortical pyramidal neurons

Sven Dorkenwald et al.

Summary: Learning from experience depends on changes in neuronal connections. In this study, the authors present a large map of connectivity between cortical neurons in the mouse primary visual cortex and use it to identify constraints on learning algorithms used by the cortex. They find that synapse size, specifically between layer 2/3 pyramidal cells, can be modeled as a combination of a binary variable and an analog variable drawn from a log-normal distribution. The binary variables of two synapses are highly correlated, while the analog variables are not.

Dynamic instability of dendrite tips generates the highly branched morphologies of sensory neurons

Sonal Shree et al.

Summary: This study discovers the dynamic instability of neuronal dendrites and its impact on morphology, and demonstrates through a computational model that this instability leads to the complex and variable dendritic morphology. These principles may apply to branching in other cell types and at different levels.

A general principle of dendritic constancy A neuron's size- and shape-invariant excitability

Hermann Cuntz et al.

Summary: Neuronal excitability in response to distributed synaptic inputs is largely unaffected by dendrite length or complexity. The impact of a neuron's size and shape on its voltage responses to dendritic synaptic activation is still not well understood. For a given synaptic density, neuronal responses depend only on the average dendritic diameter and intrinsic conductivity, with spike times depending on dendrite morphology.

The narrowing of dendrite branches across nodes follows a well-defined law

Maijia Liao et al.

Summary: The study of dendrite diameters in Drosophila class IV sensory neurons suggests that traditional power laws are not applicable, and a new diameter scaling law has been proposed based on the transport of microtubules and the requirements for dendrite tip growth. This new finding challenges existing theories and highlights the importance of cell biological constraints in determining the branched morphology of cells.
