Weed Suppression and Molecular Mechanisms of Isochlorogenic Acid A Isolated from Artemisia argyi Extract via an Activity-Guided Method

Le Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the allelopathic active constituents of Artemisia argyi were identified using activity-guided isolation and UPLC-QTOF-MS. The results showed that phenolic compounds are the main allelochemicals in A. argyi. Additionally, a novel allelochemical, ICGAA, with broad herbicidal activity was discovered. Further analysis revealed that ICGAA inhibits weed growth by inhibiting the diterpenoid biosynthesis pathway, especially gibberellins (GAs). This study provides new material sources and theoretical support for the development of biological herbicides in agroecosystems.

Emergence and establishment of mosses and ferns from spore banks after exposure to glyphosate and two bioherbicides

Linda C. Fuselier et al.

Summary: Herbicide application can have negative effects on non-target plants, but bioherbicides may be more environmentally friendly. Mosses emerge and establish slower in soil treated with cinnamon plus clove oil compared to pelargonic acid or glyphosate. Glyphosate negatively affects fern gametophyte establishment, while bioherbicides do not.

The Problem of Weed Infestation of Agricultural Plantations vs. the Assumptions of the European Biodiversity Strategy

Adrianna Kubiak et al.

Summary: Meeting the nutritional needs of a rapidly growing global society is challenging due to weed species, which are the main limitation to agricultural production. The use of traditional herbicides is not sustainable, making bioherbicides a promising alternative. Despite the effectiveness of microbial bioherbicides, the market for these products is still relatively small.

Crop Allelopathy for Sustainable Weed Management in Agroecosystems: Knowing the Present with a View to the Future

Aurelio Scavo et al.

Summary: Allelopathy, the biochemical phenomenon of chemical interactions between plants, is gaining popularity for sustainable weed management. Many important crops show allelopathic potential, which can be effectively utilized through methods like crop rotation and green manuring. Combining transgenic allelopathy with allelopathic tools can enhance the weed-suppressive efficacy.
