Adolescent BMI trajectory and associations with adult metabolic syndrome and offspring obesity

Darren. M. M. Frank et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between adolescent BMI trajectory and adult metabolic syndrome as well as intergenerational obesity. The results showed that women with persistently high BMI trajectory during adolescence had increased odds of having obese children. However, adolescent obesity was not associated with adult metabolic syndrome.

Childhood stress and midlife depression in women: the influence of diet quality

Dorothy T. Chiu et al.

Summary: This study on a cohort of Californian women at midlife found that higher current diet quality, especially aligned with chronic disease prevention guidelines, predicts lower depression risk in women with low childhood adversity. On the other hand, diet quality did not buffer depression risk in women with high childhood stress exposures. Further research is needed to examine persistent pathways of depression risk and the role of diet within them.

Prospective relationships between skin color satisfaction, body satisfaction, and binge eating in Black girls

Jordan E. Parker et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the influence of skin color satisfaction on binge eating in Black girls and found that lower skin color satisfaction predicts higher risk and symptoms of binge eating. Body satisfaction serves as a mediator in the relationship between skin color satisfaction and binge eating symptoms. The study highlights the importance of skin color dissatisfaction as a component of body image for Black girls and its association with binge eating.

Drive for thinness in adolescents predicts greater adult BMI in the Growth and Health Study cohort over 20 years

Barbara A. Laraia et al.

Summary: The study found that the drive for thinness in adolescence can persist into adulthood and predict reward-based compulsive eating behavior and higher weight status in adults. Adolescent drive for thinness has long-term effects on adult eating behaviors, while reward-based eating drive is not related to adult weight status.

Abandon Race. Focus on Racism

Paula Braveman et al.

Summary: The concept of race emerged in the 1600s with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and has been used to justify slavery, exploitation, denigration, and decimation. Despite scientific evidence against it, a deeply-rooted belief in biological differences based on physical appearance still persists. The term "race" should be abandoned in favor of "ethnic group" to dismantle racism, which influences health and well-being profoundly.
