Summary: This study aimed to identify why people in the United Kingdom purchase prescription-only medicines (POMs) from the internet and their perceptions of risks associated with fake medicines. The factors influencing the decision to buy POMs online were grouped into themes, including advantages, disadvantages, social influencing factors, barriers, and facilitators. The findings could inform the development of public awareness campaigns and interventions to minimize the purchase of POMs online.

Online Pharmacies Selling Prescription Drugs: Systematic Review

Summary: The patronage of online pharmacies is growing rapidly, but there are issues regarding the quality and legitimacy of the drugs sold. This systematic review examined the types and characteristics of online pharmacies, the quality of drugs purchased online, and the characteristics of consumers. The results revealed that almost half of online pharmacies are not properly regulated, and fraudulent issues were uncovered. To address this problem, stricter regulation and monitoring of online pharmacies are necessary.

Attitudes and behaviors regarding online pharmacies in the aftermath of COVID-19 pandemic: At the tipping point towards the new normal

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend of online purchase of goods and services, with e-pharmacy now an integral part of healthcare in developed countries. This study aimed to assess the frequency and attitudes of European consumers purchasing medications online before and after the pandemic in the Visegrad Group countries (V4). An online cross-sectional study was conducted and a majority of respondents were aware of online medication purchase, but preferred traditional pharmacies and had some opposition to buying medications through the internet. Following the outbreak of COVID-19, there was an increase in attitude towards purchasing consumer goods and medications online, but the change was significantly smaller for medications. The frequency of buying medicines and health products online has increased since the pandemic, but a proportion of participants still do not plan to purchase medications online in the future.

The results revealed potential risks associated with purchasing antibiotics online, including poor quality packaging, falsification of product information, presence of undeclared chemicals, and variability in quality across samples.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the impact of pharmacist interventions and patient decisions on health outcomes concerning medication adherence and the quality use of medicines among patients attending community pharmacies. The results revealed the effective interaction between patients and community pharmacists, the importance of pharmacist intervention on medication adherence and quality use of medicine, and the role of community pharmacists in counselling patients. Effective interaction of community pharmacists with patients in terms of medication adherence and quality use of medicines provided a better health outcome among patients.
