Effects and differences of sleep duration on the risk of new-onset chronic disease conditions in middle-aged and elderly populations

Yaoling Wang et al.

Summary: Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a study found that both the duration of nighttime sleep and daytime naps have implications for the risk of chronic diseases in middle-aged and elderly populations. Adequate sleep duration is beneficial for health, but both excessive and insufficient sleep are associated with increased risk of chronic diseases.

Summary: Higher daytime napping frequency is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, and this relationship is modified by body fat percentage and C-reactive protein. These findings emphasize the importance of adiposity and inflammation control in mitigating diabetes risk.

Poor quality of sleep in Mexican patients with type 2 diabetes and its association with lack of glycemic control

Irene Suarez-Torres et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the association between sleep quality and lack of glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients. The results showed a high prevalence of poor sleep quality and lack of glycemic control in the study population. Poor sleep quality was found to significantly double the risk of lack of glycemic control, even in the presence of other risk factors such as napping, diabetes duration, insulin use, and high diastolic blood pressure.

Summary: Compared to those who do not nap during the daytime, individuals who nap for over 1 hour have a higher prevalence of diabetes. On the other hand, those who nap for less than half an hour show lower rates of fatty liver, dyslipidemia, and central obesity.

Sleeping Duration, Napping and Snoring in Association with Diabetes Control among Patients with Diabetes in Qatar

Hiba Bawadi et al.

Summary: The study found no direct association between sleep duration and quality with glycemic control in diabetic patients. However, long hours of sleep (>= 8 hours) and napping were associated with poor glycemic control. Factors such as being female, having a high educational level, and high physical activity level were related to better glycemic control.
