A longitudinal examination of mental health and marital functioning of mothers and fathers of autistic adolescents during COVID-19

Naomi Ekas et al.

Summary: A longitudinal study found that parents, especially mothers, of autistic children may be more vulnerable to the negative effects of COVID-19. The study included 94 mothers and 58 fathers and examined changes in their mental health and marital functioning between April and October 2020. Mothers reported higher levels of mental health problems in July and October 2020. While overall levels of mental health and marital functioning did not change, pre-pandemic child functioning and marital satisfaction predicted changes in mother's ratings of marital satisfaction. The findings have implications for support strategies during challenging periods.

Parent's anxiety links household stress and young children's behavioral dysregulation

Andrea Fields et al.

Summary: Research shows that young children heavily rely on caregivers in stressful environments, with higher household stress exposure linked to elevated mental health symptoms in children aged 2-6. These associations are mediated by parental anxiety symptoms, which are also associated with increased cortisol levels in children. The study emphasizes the importance of considering the mediating effect of parents when examining the relationship between household stress and young children's behavioral development.
