Clinical significance and applications of oscillometry

David A. Kaminsky et al.

Summary: The publication of technical standards for respiratory oscillometry has a significant impact on the medical field. Oscillometry has wide applications in airway resistance, bronchodilator responsiveness, medical therapy, and has unique advantages in specific situations. Despite the great potential as a clinical tool, more clinical evidence is needed to support its routine use in diagnosing and monitoring respiratory diseases.

Summary: This study investigated the factors associated with annual decline in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study found that smoking, pneumonia, and asthma were risk factors for the progression of COPD.

Beneficial short-term effect of autogenic drainage on peripheral resistance in childhood cystic fibrosis disease

Plamen Bokov et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the effect of one physiotherapy session on mucus clearance and impulse oscillometry system indices in children with CF. The results showed that one session of autogenic drainage was able to decrease peripheral resistance in children with CF with bronchial congestion.

Summary: This study evaluated lung disease and symptom burden using oscillometry in people experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness. The results showed that oscillometry data is associated with respiratory symptom burden but not correlated with spirometry data.

Characterization of chronic lung allograft dysfunction phenotypes using spectral and intrabreath oscillometry

Summary: This study investigated whether spectral and intrabreath oscillometry can differentiate between different types of CLAD. The findings suggest that both methods can distinguish between BOS-CLAD, RAS-CLAD, and CLAD-free states, providing diagnostic and prognostic value.

Changes in Respiratory Mechanics Associated with Different Degrees of Parkinson's Disease

B. T. Caldas et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of the pathophysiological changes in the respiratory system of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients using respiratory oscillometry. The results showed significant alterations in respiratory parameters in PD patients, which indicate the potential application of respiratory oscillometry for functional evaluation of PD patients in the early stages of the disease.

The mortality rate of Parkinson's disease and related comorbidities: a nationwide population-based matched cohort study in Korea

Seo Yeon Yoon et al.

Summary: This study used Korean national cohort to evaluate the mortality rate of Parkinson's disease (PD) and found that the mortality rate of PD patients was 2.5 times higher than the comparison group over a 10-year follow-up period. Comorbidities such as stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were associated with increased mortality in PD patients, while dyslipidemia was negatively correlated with mortality. Understanding the effects of comorbidities on mortality in PD patients may help predict mortality in this population.

Macular microcirculation characteristics in Parkinson's disease evaluated by OCT-Angiography: a literature review

Evita Evangelia Christou et al.

Summary: The retina may serve as a predictive factor for neurodegenerative disorders, with recent use of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) in studying macular microcirculation changes in Parkinson's disease (PD). While preliminary evidence suggests OCT-A could be a useful biomarker for cerebral vasculature in PD, further research is needed to confirm its predictive value in clinical practice.
