Clinical efficacy of tetrandrine in artificial stone-associated silicosis: A retrospective cohort study

Wen-hong Wu et al.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study on 89 artificial stone workers in Shanghai, China found that the use of tetrandrine can control and delay the progression of silicosis fibrosis. This treatment also improves chest HRCT imaging and pulmonary function.

Progressive massive fibrosis: An overview of the recent literature

David N. Weissman

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the literature on progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), including its pathophysiology, epidemiology, impact on pulmonary function, imaging advances, and factors affecting progression to PMF in dust-exposed workers. The studies support the role of silica in causing PMF in coal miners and artificial stone workers. Computed tomography is more sensitive in detecting PMF than chest X-ray, while magnetic resonance imaging shows promise in differentiating PMF from lung cancer. The presence of small opacity pneumoconiosis increases the risk of progression to PMF. Effective new treatments for PMF are currently lacking.
