Third molar surgical difficulty scales: systematic review and preoperative assessment form

Cosme Gay-Escoda et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to collect pre-existing scales for assessing the difficulty of third molar extraction and design a proposal for a preoperative evaluation protocol. Thirteen prospective cohort studies were included in the analysis, which showed that most scales mainly included radiological variables and few patient-related variables. A proposed evaluation protocol incorporating patient-specific, radiological, and surgical variables was suggested to help with treatment planning and assessing the possibility of referral.

The Pattern of Mandibular Third Molar Impaction and Assessment of Surgery Difficulty: A Retrospective Study of Radiographs in East Baltic Population

Aleksandra Jaron et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the retention degree and difficulty in the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. The most common types of impaction were mesial-angular impaction according to Winter's classification. The anticipated difficulty of the procedures was often rated as very difficult.
