Exposure to Polypropylene Microplastics via Oral Ingestion Induces Colonic Apoptosis and Intestinal Barrier Damage through Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Mice

Rui Jia et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) can induce colonic apoptosis and intestinal barrier damage in mice, providing new insights into the toxicity of microplastics in mammals. This is achieved through oxidative stress and activation of the TLR4/NF-kappa B inflammatory signal pathway.

Hierarchical Shish-Kebab Structures Functionalizing Nanofibers for Controlled Drug Release and Improved Antithrombogenicity

Meng Guo et al.

Summary: The functionalization of fibrous scaffolds is important in tissue engineering. This study focuses on modifying a heparin-loaded fiber with a shish-kebab structure to facilitate sustained release. The introduction of the kebab structure increases the diffusion barrier and alters surface chemistry, improving anticoagulant ability and promoting endothelial cell affinity. This method shows potential as a drug delivery strategy in vascular tissue engineering.

Structure and Morphology of Poly(ε-caprolactone) Heterogeneous Shish-Kebab Structure Induced by Poly(lactic acid) Nanofibers

Zhong-Hua Chang et al.

Summary: The hybrid shish-kebab structure, blending nanofibers with different properties into a polymer matrix in a regular arrangement, has attracted attention for its excellent physical properties and functionalities. In this study, a poly(lactic acid)/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) heterogeneous shish-kebab structure was successfully created by modifying the surface of PLA nanofibers and observing the interfacial crystal morphology through microscopy techniques. The formation of the heterogeneous shish-kebab structure was mainly attributed to hydrogen bonding interactions and promoted crystallization processes, showing potential applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

A biomimetic synthetic nanofiber-based model for anterior cruciate ligament regeneration

Abass Ojo Adeoye et al.

Summary: Reconstructed ACL cannot fully restore its functions due to the absence of a physiologically viable environment for optimal biomaterial-cell interaction. The current procedures for ACL reconstruction only mechanically attach grafts to bone without any biological integration. The behavior of ACL cells in the biological attachment process is not fully understood due to the lack of appropriate testing environments. Biomimetic models could aid in studying cell behavior in health and tissue healing. The study explores the collagen fibril diameter distribution in rat ACL and creates synthetic nanofiber-based constructs to mimic the distributions in healthy and injured tissues.

Mechanical stimulation induces rapid fibroblast proliferation and accelerates the early maturation of human skin substitutes

Adam Wahlsten et al.

Summary: A new dynamic bioreactor setup was developed to reduce the production time of tissue-engineered autologous dermo-epidermal skin substitutes by applying cyclic biaxial tension to collagen hydrogels. This method resulted in increased collagen hydrogel stiffness, enhanced fibroblast proliferation, and accelerated early tissue maturation. Control of mechanobiological cues was found to be effective in driving cell response towards shorter production time for human skin substitutes.
