High viscosity bone cement vertebroplasty versus low viscosity bone cement vertebroplasty in the treatment of mid-high thoracic vertebral compression fractures

An-Jhih Luo et al.

Summary: High-viscosity bone cement (HVBC) and low-viscosity bone cement (LVBC) have similar clinical outcomes in the treatment of thoracic vertebral compression fractures, but HVBC has less cement leakage, a larger injection volume, and better postoperative pain relief.

Contribution of Minimally Invasive Bone Augmentation With PMMA Cement in Primary Fixation of Schatzker Type II Tibial Plateau Fractures

T. Vendeuvre et al.

Summary: The use of PMMA cement filling significantly improves the primary stability in Schatzker II fractures, regardless of the type of osteosynthesis. There is a significant difference in the stabilization of depression fractures between cemented and cementless osteosynthesis. However, the type of fixation does not significantly affect the separation component.

Comparison of Therapeutic Effects of PVP and PKP Combined With Triple Medication on Mild and Moderate Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture in the Elderly

Yi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study compared and analyzed the therapeutic effect of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) combined with triple therapy in elderly patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF). The results showed that PKP had a higher volume of bone cement injection, a lower incidence of complications, better vertebral body recovery height, and faster postoperative body function recovery.

Calcium phosphate cements: Optimization toward biodegradability

I. Lodoso-Torrecilla et al.

Summary: Synthetic calcium phosphate ceramics are widely used for bone regenerative treatments due to their bioactivity and osteoconductive properties. Injectable CPCs are appealing for minimally invasive surgery and filling irregular bone defects, but their poor degradability can be addressed by introducing macroporosity to accelerate new bone formation.

Role of percutaneous vertebroplasty with high-viscosity cement in the treatment of severe osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures

Kunpeng Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of high-viscosity cement vertebroplasty and conventional kyphoplasty in managing severe OVCFs. The study found that high-viscosity cement vertebroplasty had a lower rate of cement leakage, shorter operative time, while conventional kyphoplasty achieved better in restoring anterior vertebral height and improving kyphotic angle.

Summary: In treating single thoracolumbar level OVCFs, the recommended volume of low-viscosity bone cement is 4-6 mL while the optimal volume of high-viscosity bone cement is 6-8 mL. Injecting >4 mL of cement can provide patients with good improvements of clinical indicators and a low vertebral body recollapse rate.

Wenle Li et al.

Summary: The study identified injection volume of bone cement, surgery time, and multiple vertebral fractures as independent predictors of bone cement leakage. Among the six machine learning algorithms tested, Random Forest model performed the best with an AUC of 0.898, leading to the development of an online calculator for predicting the risk of bone cement leakage.

A Novel Fast-Setting Strontium-Containing Hydroxyapatite Bone Cement With a Simple Binary Powder System

Lijuan Sun et al.

Summary: A novel strontium-substituted calcium phosphate bone cement (Sr-CPC) was developed and its physicochemical properties and hydration mechanism were intensively investigated. The compressive strength of Sr-CPC tended to increase with the extension of hydration time, while cytocompatibility was favorable at low strontium contents. The effect of strontium ions on cytocompatibility of Sr-CPC was not significant.
