Shifting gender norms to improve HIV service uptake: Qualitative findings from a large-scale community mobilization intervention in rural South Africa

Anna M. Leddy et al.

Summary: This study found that challenging gender norms around male toughness/help-seeking, men's control over women, and women's sole responsibility for family health are important avenues for promoting HIV service uptake. Providing information on the benefits of early ART and building communication and conflict resolution skills also played a crucial role in encouraging couple support for HIV service uptake.
