Indoor air quality in day-care centres: a global review

Winifred U. Anake et al.

Summary: A healthy indoor environment is crucial for children's well-being, especially in day-care centers. This review provides a global overview of indoor chemical pollutant levels in day-care centers, compares these levels with IAQ regulations, evaluates the sources and health risks of these pollutants, and proposes strategies for improving IAQ. The study found that Europe and Asia have the most published studies on indoor DCCs. The most investigated pollutant was particulate matter, and nitrogen dioxide, radon, and carbon monoxide generally met the IAQ standards, while other pollutants exceeded the limits. The limited number of studies suggests the need for more comprehensive research on IAQ in DCCs globally, and the use of low-cost sensors and mobile analytical equipment should be highlighted for better accessibility of data.

Hazardous organic pollutants in indoor dust from elementary schools and kindergartens in Greece: Implications for children?s health

Athanasios Besis et al.

Summary: Hazardous organic compounds were detected in dust collected from kindergartens and elementary schools in Northern Greece, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers, brominated fire retardants, phthalate esters, organophosphate esters, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The study found that children's exposure to these compounds through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal absorption was below the health-based reference values.

Chamber study on the migration of di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP) between source surfaces and settled dust: Influence of temperature and dust loading

Ao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the migration pathways of di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP) in indoor environments were investigated. The results showed that direct contact with source surfaces enhanced the sorption of DNOP in dust, while temperature had little influence. These findings are important for reducing human exposure to phthalates in indoor environments.

Emerging concepts and opportunities for endocrine disruptor screening of the non-EATS modalities

Christopher J. Martyniuk et al.

Summary: Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are widespread and can interfere with hormone signaling through diverse chemical-receptor interactions. Current testing efforts have focused on chemicals acting through EATS modalities, with less established tests for non-EATS modalities. There is a need for validated assays for non-EATS modalities to develop regulatory tools and protect environmental and human health.

Occurrence of Phthalate Acid Esters (PAEs) in Protected Agriculture Soils and Implications for Human Health Exposure

Xianxu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in protected agriculture soils and assessed their potential health risks to humans. The results showed that DEHP and DBP were the most abundant PAEs found in the soils, while DMP and DEP were not detected. Health risk assessment revealed that children have higher health risks compared to adults.

Pollution characteristics and health risk assessment of phthalate esters in household dust in Chengdu, China

Han-Han Li et al.

Summary: A study was conducted in Chengdu, China to investigate the characteristics and health risks of 15 phthalate esters in household dust and their association with household attributes. The results showed that household products and synthetic polymer emission were the main sources of phthalate esters. Certain activities and the use of specific materials in households could increase the concentrations of phthalate esters in dust, while opening windows frequently and increasing sweeping frequency could decrease their levels in the indoor environment. The study also revealed that there were no non-carcinogenic phthalate esters in household dust for Chengdu residents, but one specific ester (DEHP) posed noticeable carcinogenic risks.

The gas/particle partitioning behavior of phthalate esters in indoor environment: Effects of temperature and humidity

Xiaojun Zhou et al.

Summary: The study examined the effects of indoor environmental parameters, such as temperature and humidity, on the partitioning behavior of phthalate esters between gas and particles. It was found that temperature had a significant impact on the gas/particle partition coefficient (K-p) with an exponential decay law observed between K-p and absolute temperature. In contrast, humidity had a smaller effect on K-p compared to temperature, and no obvious law was identified.

Summary: The research measured the levels of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phthalates in different indoor environments in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The study found that DEHP was the major pollutant in indoor dust, while PM10 was a significant source of exposure for DBP and DEHP in Saudi indoor settings. Additionally, the study highlighted concerns regarding estimated cancer risk for Saudi adults and hazardous index for Saudi children from exposure to DEHP.
