Triponderal mass index is as strong as body mass index in the determination of obesity and adiposity

Ulku Gul Siraz et al.

Summary: According to this study, triponderal mass index (TMI) is as effective as body mass index (BMI) in determining obesity and body adiposity. The study developed TMI reference values for Turkish children and adolescents and compared TMI with BMI in terms of body adiposity and obesity indices, finding similar predictive power for both measurements.

Digital Anthropometry: A Systematic Review on Precision, Reliability and Accuracy of Most Popular Existing Technologies

Edoardo Mocini et al.

Summary: Digital anthropometry (DA) has been developed for body composition evaluation and postural analysis. This review examines the current state of DA technology and evaluates the reliability and accuracy of available technologies on the market. DA shows high reliability and accuracy, especially in assessing obese patients and correlates well with conventional anthropometry and body composition estimates. DA is cost-effective and time-efficient, making it a useful screening tool before more expensive imaging techniques or as an alternative to other less affordable techniques. However, caution is needed in interpreting results due to the heterogeneity of available studies. Furthermore, there is a need for integrated technologies to analyze body composition according to multi-compartmental models.

Reference percentiles for tri-ponderal mass index and its association with general and abdominal obesity among Iranian children and adolescents: A report from the SHED LIGHT study

Avisa Tabib et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the reference percentiles of tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) for the Iranian population and its relationship with BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist circumference-to-height ratio (WHtR). The results showed that TMI had higher accuracy in identifying obesity, especially in discriminating central obesity by WHtR. Furthermore, TMI remained relatively stable across different age and sex groups, providing a single optimal cut-off point for screening obesity during childhood and adolescence.

Accuracy and capability of tri-ponderal mass index in assessing cardio-metabolic risk factors in Chinese children and adolescents aged 3 to 17 years, compared with body mass index

Rui Chen et al.

Summary: This study compares the effectiveness of Tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) and body mass index (BMI) in identifying various health conditions in children aged 3-17. The results show that TMI is equally or even more effective than BMI in identifying hypertension, abdominal obesity, and clustered cardio-metabolic risk factors (CMRFs), but it performs worse in identifying dyslipidemia and impaired fasting glucose.

Lifetime body mass index and grip strength at age 46 years: the 1970 British Cohort Study

Rachel Cooper et al.

Summary: This study found that higher BMI from childhood onwards is associated with stronger grip in midlife. It suggests that midlife obesity may have anabolic effects on muscle that outweigh the catabolic effects leading to sarcopenic obesity later in life. This highlights the importance of intervening in midlife to prevent sarcopenic obesity.

Obesity in children and adolescents: epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management

Hiba Jebeile et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on child and adolescent obesity, including its epidemiology, causes, assessment considerations, and management approaches. Prevalence of obesity had plateaued in high-income countries but increased in low-income and middle-income countries before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, weight gain among children and adolescents has increased during the pandemic. Obesity is associated with various health issues and premature mortality. The development and persistence of obesity can be explained by a bio-socioecological framework. The first-line treatment approaches involve family-based behavioral interventions addressing diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep quality. Additional therapies such as intensive dietary approaches, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery are emerging, but access to them is limited. Personalized treatment approaches and their translation to clinical practice still require further research.

Normal Weight Obesity and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Nami Mohammadian Khonsari et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that normal weight obesity (NWO) increased the odds of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs). These findings indicate the inadequacy of BMI measurement and emphasize the need for body fat assessment for a better obesity risk assessment.

Summary: Pediatric hypertension is becoming more prevalent and poses a significant public health threat. However, current screening, treatment, and control measures are suboptimal due to challenges in measurement, limited access to equipment and specialists, and conflicting guidelines. Despite these challenges, there are promising signs in terms of increased attention, public health initiatives, and research interest and funding in the field of pediatric hypertension.

Use of Tri-Ponderal Mass Index in Predicting Late Adolescent Overweight and Obesity in Children Aged 7-18

Xijie Wang et al.

Summary: In a 12-year retrospective growth cohort study conducted in Guangdong, it was found that TMI cutoffs outperformed WHO BMI cutoffs in predicting late adolescent overweight and obesity. Simplified TMI cutoffs showed promising results for predicting overweight and obesity in children aged 7 to 18 years.

Reference values for the tri-ponderal mass index and its association with cardiovascular risk factors in Brazilian adolescents aged 12 to 17 years

Rafael de Oliveira Alvim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine cutoff values for tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) and investigate the association between overweight/obesity as classified by TMI and cardiometabolic risk factors in Brazilian adolescents aged 12 to 17 years. The results showed that obesity, as classified by TMI, was strongly associated with several cardiovascular risk factors in both boys and girls.

Tri-Ponderal Mass Index vs body Mass Index in discriminating central obesity and hypertension in adolescents with overweight

Alexis E. Malavazos et al.

Summary: The research suggests that Tri-Ponderal Mass Index (TMI) is more accurate than Body Mass Index (BMI) in distinguishing central obesity and hypertension in overweight adolescents. TMI is found to be superior to BMI in characterizing body fat distribution and may support its use in assessing overweight adolescents with high cardio-metabolic risk.

Tri-Ponderal Mass Index as a Screening Tool for Identifying Body Fat and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review

Jiahong Sun et al.

Summary: TMI shows a similar or better ability than BMI in predicting body fat in children and adolescents. While TMI performs similarly to BMI in identifying metabolic syndrome, it can be a useful tool when used in combination with other indicators. Limited evidence suggests that TMI does not outperform BMI in identifying specific CVRFs in both children and adults.
