Generation of atmospheric pressure air diffuse discharge plasma in oxygen enriched working gas with floating electrode

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a stable large-area diffuse discharge plasma is generated under an open oxygen-rich environment using a floating electrode. The morphological and optical characteristics of the discharge are analyzed by measuring the discharge image and optical emission spectra. The effects of applied voltage, gas flow rate, and electrode gap on reactive species, vibrational temperature, and rotational temperature are investigated. The discharge mode is discussed through simulations of the electrostatic field before breakdown. It is found that changes in applied voltage and electrode gap cause transitions between corona mode, diffuse discharge mode, and spark mode. The floating electrode helps inhibit the transition from discharge to spark mode, maintaining discharge stability. Increasing applied voltage or decreasing electrode gap leads to the generation of more active particles, such as N-2(C) and N-2(+) (B). The Joule heating effect becomes more pronounced with increased applied voltage at electrode gaps of 15 and 20 mm. Furthermore, the vibrational temperature increases with increased applied voltage at an electrode gap of 25 mm.

Distributed compact plasma reactor decontamination for planetary protection in space missions

Bhaswati Choudhury et al.

Summary: This paper presents a proof-of-concept study on the effectiveness of the Active Plasma Sterilizer (APS) for decontamination in planetary protection. The APS uses Compact Portable Plasma Reactors (CPPRs) to produce cold plasma and reactive species like ozone for decontamination. Tests were performed on pathogenic bacteria and materials relevant to space missions, showing that the APS can achieve significant reductions in bacteria and sterilize contaminated surfaces within 30 minutes. The study also highlights the potential of the APS as a lightweight, sustainable decontamination technology with advantages in spatial decontamination, low processing temperatures, short exposure times, material compatibility, and disinfection of porous surfaces.

The influence of a second ground electrode on hydrogen peroxide production from an atmospheric pressure argon plasma jet and correlation to antibacterial efficacy and mammalian cell cytotoxicity

Bhagirath Ghimire et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of adding a 2nd ground electrode on the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in deionised water (DIW) in an argon plasma jet. It is found that the addition of a 2nd ground electrode leads to higher charge accumulation and increased discharge current and dissipated power, resulting in a higher electron temperature and more than twice the production of H2O2. The double ground electrode plasma jet is effective in reducing the growth of common wound pathogens and has low cytotoxicity in skin-like cells. These findings are valuable for optimizing plasma sources for clinical applications.

Plasma dynamics, instabilities and OH generation in a pulsed atmospheric pressure plasma with liquid cathode: a diagnostic study

Yuanfu Yue et al.

Summary: This work investigates the impact of the interaction between positive pulsed DC atmospheric pressure plasma jet with He-0.1% H2O mixture and liquid cathode on the plasma morphology and OH generation. The results show that plasma instabilities and enhanced evaporation have a significant influence on the OH generation. At higher plasma energies, the plasma contracts due to thermal instability, leading to a decrease in OH density in the core, while at lower plasma energies, the instability is suppressed by the equivalent series resistor of the liquid electrode.

Influence of pulse modulation frequency on helium RF atmospheric pressure plasma jet characteristics

Mahreen et al.

Summary: This work investigates the influence of pulse modulation frequency on the fundamental characteristics of a helium RF atmospheric pressure plasma jet. The results show that operating at low pulse modulation frequencies enhances plasma dimensions, electron densities, and optical emission from reactive species. The study also discusses the impact of duty cycle and applied RF power on the plasma jet characteristics. The findings provide important insights for selecting appropriate operating conditions for industrial and biomedical applications.

Summary: This paper presents a joint calibration scheme for voltage and current probes to accurately resolve voltage-current phase differences, even when the difference is very close to 90 degrees. This has been a major issue with V-I probes used with miniature RF plasma devices. The proposed scheme improves the accuracy of phase resolution and provides indispensable tools for electrical characterization of RF plasma devices.
