Application of nickel chitosan nanoconjugate as an antifungal agent for combating Fusarium rot of wheat

Divya Chouhan et al.

Summary: This interdisciplinary study compared the efficacy of chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs), nickel chitosan nanoconjugate (NiCNC), and commercial fungicide Mancozeb in controlling Fusarium rot of wheat. The physical properties of CNPs and NiCNC were characterized using various techniques. The results showed that NiCNC completely inhibited the fungal growth at a suitable concentration and caused significant damage to the fungal cells. Moreover, NiCNC reduced the incidence of rot disease in wheat seedlings and helped them overcome the adverse effects of the pathogen.

Biochemical characterization of a novel acidic chitinase with antifungal activity from Paenibacillus xylanexedens Z2-4

Wenjiao Zhang et al.

Summary: The chitinase gene PxChi52 from Paenibacillus xylanexedens Z2-4 was cloned and expressed heterologously, showing high activity and stability towards chitin hydrolysis. In addition, PxChi52 displayed inhibitory effects on the growth of some phytopathogenic fungi. These unique properties suggest potential applications in agriculture as a biocontrol agent.

Extracellular Antifungal Activity of Chitinase-Producing Bacteria Isolated From Guano of Insectivorous Bats

C. D. Delfini et al.

Summary: This study isolated chitinolytic bacteria from the guano of insectivorous bats, showing antifungal activities against 16 fungi. The cell-free supernatants of bacterial cultures demonstrated stable chitinase and antifungal activities, inhibiting hyphae formation and germination spores of phytopathogenic fungi. These results suggest the feasibility of using eco-friendly cell-free supernatants as alternatives to toxic chemicals for reducing the use of agrochemicals.
