Progress of blue carbon research: 12 years of global trends based on content analysis of peer-reviewed and 'gray literature' documents

Jay Mar D. Quevedo et al.

Summary: Blue carbon (BC) research has progressed and evolved over the years, but knowledge gaps and overlaps in science and practice remain. This literature review examines 1179 BC-related documents and finds a preference for academic research papers over gray literature. The geographic distribution of BC documents is uneven, reflecting weak international collaborations. BC research is also biased towards natural/physical/applied sciences rather than social and policy-oriented papers, although the number of social-driven publications is increasing in recent years.

Community homeostasis of coastal microbial mats from the Camargue during winter (cold) and summer (hot) seasons

Mercedes Berlanga et al.

Summary: In this study, the microbial mats from the Camargue wetlands in southern France were analyzed to determine their community variability and functionality. The microbial composition of the mats varied significantly between different layers and seasons, with certain phyla of bacteria being more abundant in specific layers. The bioinformatics analysis revealed that the mats were more active in summer and had a predominant carbon fixation pathway. The microbial mats showed a community homeostasis, adapting to fluctuating conditions while maintaining their characteristic structure.

Ecosystem organic carbon storage and their drivers across the drylands of China

Longwei Dong et al.

Summary: Earth's drylands store a significant amount of organic carbon, playing a crucial role in regulating atmospheric CO2 concentrations and mitigating climate change. However, our understanding of the magnitude and drivers of organic carbon stocks in these ecosystems, particularly in deserts, is limited. This study surveyed a large number of plots and collected soil samples from grassland and desert ecosystems in China's drylands, revealing the distribution and factors influencing organic carbon stocks. The findings provide valuable insights into the carbon cycle in drylands and complement our understanding of ecosystem carbon stocks in China.

Lu Jiang et al.

Summary: Blue carbon sinks, such as mangroves, saltmarshes, and seagrasses, are considered an effective nature-based approach for climate change mitigation. This study evaluated the growth and characteristics of blue carbon sink research, finding that mangrove carbon sinks were the most popular topic. Stable isotope and remote sensing were identified as the most researched technologies for mapping and quantifying blue carbon sinks. The threats to blue carbon sinks are complex and distinctive, highlighting the need for further research on restoration, conservation, and management of blue carbon ecosystems.

The effect of salinity on soil chemical characteristics, enzyme activity and bacterial community composition in rice rhizospheres in Northeastern Thailand

Natthawat Sritongon et al.

Summary: Saline soil limits rice productivity in Northeastern Thailand. This study investigated soil physicochemical analysis, soil enzyme activities, and bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of 'RD 6' rice grown in salt-affected rice fields. The results showed that soil chemical characteristics and soil enzymes activities explained a high percentage of the total variation. Soil properties and enzyme activities were adversely affected by salinity, while bacterial communities showed some resistance. These findings provide promising data for assessing the quality of rice field soil in the future.

Salt flat microbial diversity and dynamics across salinity gradient

Khaled M. Hazzouri et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the microbial composition and population genetic structure of a sabkha. It found high microbial diversity in the inner and edge sabkha, and different microbial composition in the outer sabkha. The study also identified predominant microbial phyla in different regions of the sabkha. Additionally, important genes related to biogeochemical cycles and secondary metabolite biosynthesis were found in the metagenomes. The study concluded that horizontal gene transfers, recombination, and gene specific selection contribute to the genetic variation in bacterial populations along the salinity gradient in the sabkha ecosystem.

Modern dolomite formation caused by seasonal cycling of oxygenic phototrophs and anoxygenic phototrophs in a hypersaline sabkha

Zach A. Diloreto et al.

Summary: The Dolomite Problem, a century-old controversy, involves the formation of low-temperature dolomite in ancient rocks despite favorable geochemical conditions. Microbes and their exopolymeric substances (EPS) have been found to play a role in nucleating dolomite, with a shift in microbial communities affecting the EPS suited for dolomite precipitation. The turnover of organic material under anoxic conditions is identified as an important driver of the process, shedding new light on the interpretation of dolomite throughout Earth's history.
