Prolonged Opioid Use following Hand Surgery: A Systematic Review and Proposed Criteria

Steven P. Moura et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the definitions of prolonged opioid use after surgery and proposed appropriate criteria for defining prolonged opioid use in hand surgery. The findings suggest that most literature reports similar timepoints for defining prolonged use, but often fail to consider the specific type of surgery.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Ulnar Nerve Entrapment Are Associated with Impaired Psychological Health in Adults as Appraised by Their Increased Use of Psychotropic Medication

Lars B. Dahlin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the psychological health of individuals diagnosed and surgically treated for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE), or both, by examining the use of psychotropic drugs. The study found that individuals with nerve compression disorders had a higher risk of using psychotropic drugs, and this risk was associated with factors such as age, gender, income, and occupational qualification level.

Long-term opioid use and mortality in patients with chronic non-cancer pain: Ten-year follow-up study in South Korea from 2010 through 2019

In-Ae Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with long-term opioid use among patients with chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) in South Korea. The study found that long-term opioid use increased among CNCP patients from 2010 to 2019. Certain factors were identified as potential risk factors for long-term opioid use, and long-term opioid use was associated with increased 10-year all-cause mortality among CNCP patients.

Duration of opioid use and association with socioeconomic status, daily dose and formulation: a two-decade population study in Queensland, Australia

Adeleke D. Adewumi et al.

Summary: The study identified a significant association between higher opioid doses, living in low socioeconomic status areas, and an increased risk of long-term dispensing of opioid prescriptions. The risk of long-term opioid use was found to increase as the dosage of opioids increased, with the highest risk observed in individuals with the lowest socioeconomic status.
