Comparative genomics of plant pathogenic Diaporthe species and transcriptomics of Diaporthe caulivora during host infection reveal insights into pathogenic strategies of the genus

Eilyn Mena et al.

Summary: In this study, the genomic and transcriptomic information of D. caulivora, a fungal pathogen causing stem canker in soybean, was analyzed to gain insights into its molecular basis of pathogenicity. The study revealed a large number of genes encoding secreted pathogenicity-related proteins in D. caulivora, and identified various factors related to host infection strategies, including plant cell wall degradation and modification, compound detoxification, transporter activities, and toxin production.

Thirty years of resistance: Zig-zag through the plant immune system

Bruno Pok Man Ngou et al.

Summary: Understanding the plant immune system is crucial for protecting crops from diseases. Plants have a two-tiered innate immune system to resist pathogens. Over the last 30 years, significant progress has been made in identifying immune receptors and understanding the signaling pathways and interactions between different components of the immune system.

Breeding for disease resistance in soybean: a global perspective

Feng Lin et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive atlas of QTLs, genes, and alleles conferring resistance to 28 important diseases in all major soybean production regions in the world. Marker-assisted selection and genomic selection have been demonstrated to be successful methods in quickly integrating vertical resistance or horizontal resistance into improved soybean varieties. The review also highlights major breakthroughs in the discovery of disease resistance gene atlas of soybean.

A novel TIR-NBS-LRR gene regulates immune response to Phytophthora root rot in soybean

Li Zhou et al.

Summary: Phytophthora root rot, caused by Phytophthora sojae, is a devastating disease of soybean. The NBS-LRR gene family and miRNA play important roles in the interaction between soybean and oomycete. The GmTNL16/gma-miR1510 pair participates in soybean defense response via the JA and SA pathways.

The Resistance of Narrow-Leafed Lupin to Diaporthe toxica Is Based on the Rapid Activation of Defense Response Genes

Michal Ksiazkiewicz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to a pathogenic fungus in narrow-leafed lupin by analyzing gene expression differences between resistant and susceptible lines during infection. The results showed that resistant lines activated genes controlling reactive oxygen species and oxylipin biosynthesis early in the infection process, while susceptible lines induced different genes for defense. Additionally, global transcriptome reprogramming occurred earlier in resistant lines with specific resistance alleles compared to susceptible lines.

Transcriptional profiling reveals conserved and species-specific plant defense responses during the interaction of Physcomitrium patens with Botrytis cinerea

Guillermo Reboledo et al.

Summary: The study identified molecular mechanisms underlying the defense response of the bryophyte Physcomitrium patens against the plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea, with a total of 3,072 differentially expressed genes significantly affected. The results highlight the existence of evolutionary conserved defense responses to pathogens throughout the green plant lineage, suggesting they were likely present in the common ancestors of land plants. The differential expression of genes acquired from horizontal transfer and moss-specific orphan genes during B. cinerea infection indicates their importance in the moss immune response.

PTI-ETI crosstalk: an integrative view of plant immunity

Minhang Yuan et al.

Summary: Plants have innate immune responses to resist pathogen attacks, involving pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) and nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat containing receptors (NLRs) that lead to pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI). Despite different activation mechanisms, PTI and ETI converge into similar downstream responses, with evidence of interactions and shared components between PRR-mediated and NLR-mediated signaling cascades. Future research on signal collaboration between PRR-initiated and NLR-initiated immunity will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the plant immune system.
