Identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and candidate genes of seed Iron and zinc content in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]

Huan Wang et al.

Summary: Research on the genetic mechanism of seed iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) content in soybean is important for addressing global hidden hunger. In this study, a population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) was evaluated in four environments to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with seed Fe and Zn content. The results showed significant variation in seed Fe and Zn content across environments, with strong influences of genotype, environment, and genotype x environment interactions. The study also discovered QTLs and candidate genes related to seed Fe and Zn content, which can contribute to the biofortification of soybeans and accelerate the development of marker-assisted selection (MAS) for breeding iron and zinc-fortified soybeans.

Quantitative trait loci mapping and candidate gene analysis of stoma-related traits in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) glumes

Ning Li et al.

Summary: The genetic base of wheat glume stomata is not fully understood. This study mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for stomatal traits onto a high-density genetic linkage map of a doubled haploid (DH) population. A total of 61 QTLs were mapped onto 16 chromosomes, and two QTL hotspots were detected. Additionally, five candidate genes were identified, which may play a role in the response of wheat glume stomata to abiotic stresses.

A transcriptional regulator that boosts grain yields and shortens the growth duration of rice

Shaobo Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, a photosynthesis-related transcription factor, OsDREB1C, was identified and found to regulate various functions such as photosynthetic capacity, nitrogen utilization, and flowering time in rice. Field trials with OsDREB1C-overexpressing rice showed increased yield, shortened growth duration, and improved nitrogen use efficiency.

Genome-wide association study identifies loci, beneficial alleles, and candidate genes for cadmium tolerance in castor (Ricinus communis L.)

Akwasi Yeboah et al.

Summary: This study conducted a genome-wide association study to identify marker-trait associations and candidate genes for cadmium tolerance in castor. The results revealed a wide variation in cadmium tolerance among the 175 castor accessions, with 27 significant marker loci associated with tolerance traits. Additionally, 29 beneficial alleles and 181 sensitive alleles were identified, along with eight novel putative candidate genes involved in stress responses and developmental processes.

Expression of a DREB 5-A subgroup transcription factor gene from Ricinus communis (RcDREB1) enhanced growth, drought tolerance and pollen viability in tobacco

Tomas Felipe Costa do Rego et al.

Summary: Introduction of the RcDREB1 gene into tobacco plants resulted in enhanced drought tolerance, increased biomass, plant height and leaf water content compared to non-transgenic plants. Additionally, transgenic lines showed improved recovery after re-watering and increased pollen viability under heat and desiccation stresses.

Brassica juncea leaf cuticle proteome analysis shows myrosinase protein, antifreeze activity, and post-translationally modified secretory proteins

Meenakshi Arya et al.

Summary: The study identified leaf cuticle proteins from Brassica juncea using organic solvents, analyzing them through gel-based and quantitative shotgun proteomics. Most of the proteins had signal peptides supporting extracellular localization and were predicted to be involved in various activities such as defense response, fatty acid binding, and nutrient reservoir activity. The study also explored the roles of specific proteins like Myrosinase and GDSL esterase/lipase ESM1 in cuticle structuring and defense, as well as the glucosinolate-myrosinase system, PTM crosstalk, and antifreeze activity as stress adaptive strategies in B. juncea.

The genetic basis of water-use efficiency and yield in lettuce

Annabelle Damerum et al.

Summary: The study characterized the genetic basis of water use efficiency (WUE) in lettuce and identified key genomic regions controlling WUE and yield under well-watered and water-limiting conditions. A QTL hotspot controlling carbon isotope discrimination, stomatal conductance, and yield under drought conditions was identified on chromosome 8, with promising candidate genes associated with WUE.

Optical topometry and machine learning to rapidly phenotype stomatal patterning traits for maize QTL mapping

Jiayang Xie et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-throughput epidermal cell phenotyping pipeline and QTL mapping in maize, demonstrating the genetic basis of stomatal patterning. Optical topometry and machine learning tools were used to assess epidermal cell patterning and analyze its genetic architecture alongside leaf photosynthetic gas exchange. Thirty-six consistent QTL and 24 clusters of overlapping QTL were identified, suggesting pleiotropy in multiple cases.
