Design of non-autonomous pH oscillators and the existence of chemical beat phenomenon in a neutralization reaction

Hugh Shearer Lawson et al.

Summary: In this study, the beat phenomenon was successfully demonstrated in chemical systems by titrating acid and alkaline solutions with each other in a continuous stirred-tank reactor, resulting in temporal pH oscillations. The frequency of the chemical beat pattern follows the well-known relationship from physics, providing a way to design and engineer non-autonomous pH oscillatory systems with controlled oscillation characteristics. This phenomenon can be utilized in practical applications, such as driving the reversible assembly and disassembly of pH-sensitive building blocks for nanotechnology and biomedical applications.
