Risk of genital and urinary tract infections associated with SGLT-2 inhibitors as an add-on therapy to metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A retrospective cohort study in Korea

Hyeri Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that adding SGLT-2 inhibitors to metformin as a therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus increases the risk of genital and urinary tract infections. Compared to DPP-4 inhibitors, SU, and TZD, SGLT-2 inhibitors are significantly associated with a higher risk of genital and urinary tract infections.

The burden and risks of emerging complications of diabetes mellitus

Dunya Tomic et al.

Summary: The traditional complications of diabetes mellitus have been well-known, but emerging evidence suggests the existence of a different set of complications. Cancer and dementia have become the leading causes of death in people with diabetes, replacing vascular disease. Additionally, diabetes has been linked to a range of comorbidities, including cognitive decline, functional disability, affective disorders, obstructive sleep apnoea, and liver disease. There is currently no comprehensive review summarizing the burden and risks of these emerging complications.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes accounts for nearly 90% of global diabetes cases, with an increasing number of affected individuals, particularly among young people. Early detection and proactive management are crucial for preventing complications and reducing mortality. Technology and precision medicine offer potential improvements to treatment outcomes but face significant barriers.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and the risk of urinary tract infection among diabetic patients in Japan: Target trial emulation using a nationwide administrative claims database

Yoshinori Takeuchi et al.

Summary: This population-based cohort study aimed to assess the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) occurrence associated with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor use relative to biguanide use in diabetes using a target trial emulation framework. The study found that the use of SGLT2 inhibitors or DPP-4 inhibitors did not increase the risk of UTI compared with biguanide use, and accounting for treatment changes did not substantially influence the estimated effects.

Kyu Yeon Hur et al.

Summary: The Committee of Clinical Practice Guidelines of the Korean Diabetes Association updated the clinical practice guidelines for Korean adults with diabetes and prediabetes, providing recommendations for healthcare providers managing patients with diabetes and at-risk individuals. The guidelines include revisions on screening, glucose-lowering agents, and new sections on continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pump use, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in patients with diabetes. The KDA also recommends active vaccination for COVID-19 in diabetic patients during the pandemic.
