Real time Gutenberg-Richter b-value estimation for an ongoing seismic sequence: an application to the 2022 marche offshore earthquake sequence (ML 5.7 central Italy)

I Spassiani et al.

Summary: In this study, we estimate the b-value parameter of the Gutenberg-Richter law for earthquake magnitudes in the early stage of the Costa Marchigiana seismic sequence. We obtained the completeness magnitude M-c and the b-value within the first 4 to 7 days after the initial strong event in the sequence. Our research provides a practical example of real-time b-value estimation and its potential interpretation in short-term forecasting. We emphasize the critical issues to consider in estimating/interpreting the b-value and evaluating the real-time estimation of M-c.

Buried Alive: Imaging the 9 November 2022, Mw 5.5 Earthquake Source on the Offshore Adriatic Blind Thrust Front of the Northern Apennines (Italy)

F. E. Maesano et al.

Summary: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred offshore Pesaro, Italy, rupturing a buried thrust fault known as the Cornelia thrust system (CTS). The CTS is a 30km long arcuate structure that strikes NW-SE and dips SW, and may have been influenced by older structures at its footwall. Further investigation is needed to understand the full earthquake potential of this seismogenic source.

Rotation at subduction margins: How complexity at fault-scale (the 2019 Albanian Mw 6.4 earthquake) mirrors the regional deformation

Giuseppe Pezzo et al.

Summary: The article explores the tectonic processes and crustal stress-strain rate fields along circum-Mediterranean orogenic belts, with a focus on the geology of the Albanides belt in the eastern region. The study reveals a fault-scale complexity in the Albanides plate boundary, influenced by various tectonic processes.

Surface Velocities and Strain-Rates in the Euro-Mediterranean Region From Massive GPS Data Processing

Enrico Serpelloni et al.

Summary: In this work, new geodetic velocity and strain-rate fields for the Euro-Mediterranean region obtained from the analysis of continuous GNSS stations are presented and discussed. The procedures and methods adopted to analyze raw GPS observations from over 4000 stations in the region are described. The computational infrastructure, methods, and procedures used to obtain a three-dimensional GPS velocity field, as well as spatial velocity gradients and horizontal strain-rates, are discussed. The results of the analysis provide valuable insights into the crust deformation and various geophysical processes in the region.

A brief history of the Harvest experiment: 1989-2019

Bruce Haines et al.

Summary: The Harvest Oil Platform near Point Conception, California, has been a key verification site for NASA's altimeter missions, providing valuable data for climate research. This review article traces the history of the platform verification experiment since 1989 and highlights its role in informing the development of a stable and accurate climate data record.

Seismogenic fault system of the M-w 6.4 November 2019 Albania earthquake: new insights into the structural architecture and active tectonic setting of the outer Albanides

Simone Teloni et al.

Summary: The seismic sequence in the Durres region from late 2019 to early 2020 showed that the area is dominated by ENE-trending horizontal maximum compression with seismogenic sources mainly consisting of ENE-dipping thrust faults. Most earthquakes, including the main shock, originated within the basement, while shallow aftershocks tended to cluster around previously identified seismogenic structures within the sedimentary cover. These findings indicate a profound reconsideration of the seismotectonic setting in the region and the assessment of seismic hazard in densely populated areas of Albania.

Probabilistic Assessment of Slip Rates and Their Variability Over Time of Offshore Buried Thrusts: A Case Study in the Northern Adriatic Sea

Yuri Panara et al.

Summary: This study successfully reconstructed the three-dimensional geometry of eleven buried thrusts in the Northern Apennines chain and documented the recent 4 million years slip history of four of these thrusts. The findings show that thrust activation proceeds from the inner to the outer position in the chain, revealing an exponential reduction in slip rates over time with a major change around 1.5 million years ago.
