Structure of the Ob-Yenisei plume in the Kara Sea shortly before autumn ice formation

Summary: The major Siberian rivers form large river plumes in the Arctic Ocean, which govern the structure of the sea surface layer. Little is known about the processes occurring within these river plumes in late autumn. In this study, in situ measurements were performed in the Kara Sea in late October, revealing intense convection and sharp salinity gradients in the Ob-Yenisei plume caused by cold air transport and horizontal mixing.

Structure and Productivity of the Phytoplankton Community in the Southwestern Kara Sea in Early Summer

Summary: Knowledge of the structure and productivity of Arctic marine planktonic algae communities is crucial to understanding potential changes in the pelagic ecosystem in the Kara Sea under climate change. This study found that species diversity, phytoplankton abundance, and algal production were highest at the beginning of summer during ice melting. The study was conducted in the southwestern Kara Sea and estuarine zone of the Ob and Yenisei rivers from June 29 to July 15, 2018. Factors such as silicate content and salinity were found to influence phytoplankton abundance and productivity.

Dynamics of Carbonate Characteristics of the Kara Sea Waters in the Late Autumn Season of 2021

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of the carbonate system, surface water corrosivity with respect to aragonite, and CO2 fluxes in the ocean-atmosphere system in the Kara Sea. The results show that the Kara Sea is one of the most significant sinks for atmospheric CO2 in the Arctic. The study also finds that the spatial variability of pCO(2) is mainly determined by surface water temperature changes.

Structure and Variability of the Lena River Plume in the South-Eastern Part of the Laptev Sea

Summary: This study focuses on the structure and seasonal variability of the most freshened part of the Lena plume in the southeastern part of the Laptev Sea, specifically in the Buor-Khaya Bay. It is found that the Buor-Khaya Bay accumulates freshwater discharge from the Lena River during summer and maintains reduced salinity for a longer period in autumn compared to the adjacent area near the Lena Delta. This bay acts as a reservoir of freshwater discharge and a secondary source of freshened and warm water in the region during the autumn-winter period, similar in volume to the discharge of the Lena River.
