Abbas Ali Chandio et al.

Summary: This study is the first attempt to assess the long-term effects of climate change on crop production in South Asian countries. The results show that temperature and CO2 emissions have a negative effect on crop production, while precipitation has a positive effect. Drivers of spatiotemporal patterns of surface water inputs in a catchment at the rain-snow transition zone of the water-limited western United States

K. Hale et al.

Summary: Spatial and temporal dynamics of rainfall and snowmelt control the availability of water resources in the rain-snow transition zone of the western United States. The sensitivity of spatiotemporal surface water inputs (SWI) across different water years is poorly understood. A study conducted in a headwater catchment in Idaho modeled rainfall and snowpack dynamics for two hydrologically distinct years. The results showed that SWI is influenced by total precipitation, snow drifts, elevation, and slope aspect. The distribution of SWI is expected to change with declining snowfall and redistribution as the climate warms.

The isotopes of precipitation have climate change signal in arid Central Asia

Guofeng Zhu et al.

Summary: Global climate change varies regionally, so it is important to analyze climate change in different regions using different indicators and methods. This study analyzed changes in isotopes in precipitation in Arid Central Asia (ACA) to verify the reliability of stable isotopes as indicators of climate change. The results showed a strong correlation between precipitation isotopes and temperature, indicating an increasing trend in ACA temperature during 1970-1998 and 2015-2021, and a decreasing trend during 1999-2014. The enrichment of stable precipitation isotopes reflected changes in westerly winds and monsoons in ACA. Stable isotopes, especially 818O, were found to be valid indicators of climate change.

Economic analysis of water footprint for water management of rain-fed and irrigated almonds in Iran

Ommolbanin Bazrafshan et al.

Summary: Applying hydrological concepts such as water footprint, economical water footprint, and virtual water trade is crucial for improved water resource management. This study examines the water footprint and economical water footprint of rain-fed and irrigated almonds in Iran from 2006 to 2016. The results show that rain-fed almonds have an average water footprint of 9.2 m(3)kg(-1) and an economical water footprint of 2.88 m(3) per $, with 72% green water footprint and 28% grey. Irrigated almonds have a water footprint of 11.4 m(3)kg(-1) and an economical water footprint of 5.16 m(3) per $, with 19% green, 71% blue, and 10% grey water footprints. The total average water footprint of almond production is 10167.3 MCM year(-1), with 80% being irrigated and 20% rain-fed. Approximately 9343 MCM year(-1) of this amount is exported overseas through virtual water trade. Increasing rain-fed almond yield improves the productivity of green water and reduces the pressure on water resources based on water footprint criteria. This study highlights the usefulness of water footprint and economical water footprint concepts in water resource conservation and management in agriculture, considering Iran's water and soil limitations.

GIS-based techniques were also used to identify potential groundwater zones. The results showed that there were varying groundwater levels during different seasons, with a declining trend observed in the recent years. Assessment of temporal changes in frequency characteristics of annual maximum rainfall of daily duration over Bangladesh

Samiran Das et al.

Summary: Understanding changes in extreme rainfall frequency can help in assessing flood risk. A study in Bangladesh examined the temporal changes in extreme rainfall frequency using various methods and investigated the possible connections with climate indices. Results showed that extreme rainfall can be described by a generalised extreme value distribution. Trends analysis revealed that a majority of stations displayed significant trends in the frequency characteristics, with decreases in mean extremes and increases in high return period quantiles. The influence of El Nino-Southern Oscillation on rainfall extremes was found to be higher than that of Indian Ocean Dipole, although the outcome was inconclusive. Non-stationary frequency analysis could be an option for estimating extremes.

Investigating the Reliability of Stationary Design Rainfall in a Mediterranean Region under a Changing Climate

Dario Treppiedi et al.

Summary: Extreme rainfall events have become more frequent, potentially due to climate change, leading to a higher risk of hydraulic infrastructure failure and questioning the reliability of design rainfall based on historical data. This study challenges the stationary assumption of commonly used rainfall Depth-Duration-Frequency curves in Sicily. Results show significant underestimation of rainfall quantiles calculated with regional methods, indicating the need for longer return periods in designing hydraulic works and increased risk for existing infrastructure. Future investigation is crucial for effective water management and detecting hydrological risks under a changing climate.

Spatiotemporal variability of rainfall erosivity and its teleconnection with atmospheric circulation in monsoon-driven climate region

Md. Musabbir et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the spatiotemporal variability of rainfall erosivity (RE) in Bangladesh and analyze its teleconnection with atmospheric circulation indices. The results showed a decreasing trend in the annual mean RE in recent decades, with the highest values observed in the southern part of the country. The impact of Nino3.4SST, IOD, SASMI, and EASMI on the monthly scale of RE was minimal. The study also found a significant reduction in average RE with increasing distance from the sea, latitude, and elevation in Bangladesh, with changes in precipitation, cloud liquid water content, and warm-moist airflow contributing to RE variability and change.

Summary: Global climate change has led to an increasing frequency and intensity of extreme climates, which have impacted land surface phenology in Central Asia. This study evaluated the effects of extreme climates on land surface phenology and found that the start of the season was delayed, the end of the season advanced, and the length of the growing season shortened. Most extreme climate indices showed increasing trends, except for certain cold and precipitation indices. Changes in monsoon precipitation patterns over Bangladesh and its teleconnections with global climate

Summary: Understanding changes in monsoon precipitation patterns is essential for addressing floods and droughts in Bangladesh. This study investigates the changes in monsoon precipitation patterns and their connection with large-scale atmospheric oscillations in Bangladesh. The results show a significant decrease in light and moderate precipitation indices and an increase in heavy precipitation indices. The study also reveals a correlation between monsoon precipitation indices and atmospheric circulation indices. Further analysis suggests that changes in sea surface temperature, temperature, geopotential height, precipitation rate, and moisture divergence play a role in driving monsoon precipitation changes.
