Reformulated McNamara RBE-weighted beam orientation optimization for intensity modulated proton therapy

Pavitra Ramesh et al.

Summary: The reformulated McNamara RBE model can effectively minimize biological dose to organs at risk in proton therapy, improving both dose distribution and treatment planning flexibility. Comparing different optimization techniques, McNam-FISTA and McNam-CP show significant improvements in organ-at-risk doses and robustness, suggesting the potential benefits of directly incorporating McNamara RBE in proton treatment planning.

Normal Tissue Injury Induced by Photon and Proton Therapies: Gaps and Opportunities

Pataje G. Prasanna et al.

Summary: Despite the dosimetric advantages and favorable toxicity profiles of proton therapy, a review of clinical trials reveals the presence of adverse events in specific organs/sites among patients receiving treatment with protons. Comparative analysis of completed randomized trials suggests no significant differences in outcomes between stereotactic body radiation therapy and stereotactic body proton therapy for early stage non-small cell lung cancer, or between intensity modulated radiation therapy and passive scattering proton therapy for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Does the uncertainty in relative biological effectiveness affect patient treatment in proton therapy?

Brita S. Sorensen et al.

Summary: Proton therapy uses RBE to convert absorbed doses, however, RBE is not constant and can increase at the edge of the proton beam. Concerns about the clinical impact and emerging studies have prompted discussions on managing RBE uncertainties in patient care to develop safer and more effective treatment strategies.

DNA damage response of haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells to high-LET neutron irradiation

Therapeutic Efficacy of Variable Biological Effectiveness of Proton Therapy in U-CH2 and MUG-Chor1 Human Chordoma Cell Death

Prerna Singh et al.

Summary: Chordoma, a rare and slow-growing cancer of the spinal cord, is traditionally treated with photon radiation therapy and surgery. Proton radiation therapy has gained popularity for its ability to reduce off-target radiation dose, but there are still concerns about toxicity to surrounding structures. A study found that the end of the proton radiation field resulted in significantly higher cell death compared to the middle of the field, suggesting variations in relative biological effectiveness.

High LET-Like Radiation Tracks at the Distal Side of Accelerated Proton Bragg Peak

Dakota Horendeck et al.

Summary: Proton therapy is a type of hadron radiotherapy with potentially higher biological effectiveness compared to X-rays. Experimental findings suggest that proton radiation induces the most cytotoxic effects near the Bragg peak, with extended cytotoxicity observed a few millimeters after the peak.
