Deciphering the Role of Mucosal Immune Responses and the Cervicovaginal Microbiome in Resistance to HIV Infection in HIV-Exposed Seronegative (HESN) Women

Sivasankaran Munusamy Ponnan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated higher levels of antiviral cytokines, soluble immunoglobulins, activated NK cells, CXCR5(+) CD8(+) T cells, and Tfh cells in the vaginal mucosa of HESN women compared to HIV-unexposed healthy women. The cervicovaginal microbiome of HESN women showed greater bacterial diversity and increased abundance of Gardnerella spp. These findings suggest that the female genital tract of HESN females has innate immune factors, antiviral mediators, and critical T cell subsets that may protect against HIV infection.

Sexual Behaviors and Factors Associated with Condomless Sexual Practice in Colombian Men Who Have Sex with Men at High Risk of HIV Transmission

Ana Claudia Ossa-Giraldo et al.

Summary: Men who have sex with men (MSM) in Colombia have a high HIV prevalence, with factors associated with condomless sexual practice including the number of sexual partners, age, having sex with HIV-positive individuals, and a history of sexually transmitted infections. Efforts to implement prevention programs, PrEP, and ensure access to treatment for people living with HIV are reinforced by this study.
